Her hobby is not.the Easter egg variety that calls for hard boiling an egg before dipping it into dye or painting it. Her decorations pretty up an egg inside and out. Requirements include a steady hand, the ability' to think small and patience. Tools can be sophisticated specialties or items (round around the kitchen: First the shell's contents must he removed without cracking the exterioir. My friend uses a dremel - a hand -motorized drill, much like a dentist's drill - to cut a hole in the side of the egg. But. scissors will do the trick. Some people put a nee- dle hole in the top and bot- tom of the egg and "blow out ' the yolk and white. Some use their own blow power. while others use aids, such as a bicycle pump. Eggs provide a 'natural variety in colour and size. The duck egg. for example, is blue on the inside and Odds'n ends Then the egg is dipped in food colouring. If two different colours are re- quired - one on the inside, the other on the outside - the egg can be painted with water colours. A few drops of cooking oil in the food dye results in a mottled effect. Some people use a lacquer to create a more brilliant colour and shiny finish. Sizes vary from a banty or pullet egg to a goose egg. Next a scene is created in- side the shell. Tiny figues of people and pictures of birds, animals. trees, stars, buildings. flowers or whatever the imagination requires can be found on greeting cards. Magazine pictures are usually too sy. The pictures can be daub- ed with a clear glue and stuck inside the egg with tweezers. toothpaste- or' fingers. A three-dimensional effect is achieved by placing smaller pictures at the back and larger ones at the front. Pictdres. paint or sequins can decorate the outside of the shell. while yarn or rib- bon can cover the edge of the hole. If a door is Wanted, a notch is made in the piece of shell that is removed and in the side of the shell..A tiny hinge. that can be found at craft shops. is than glued onto the -door and the shell. My friend. Joan, glued loops of invisible thread to several of her eggs and hung them on a piece of driftwood to make a unique ornament. My favourites are a Nativity scene complete with a door. a spring scene with a little girl gathering tulips and daffodils in a basket. and a forest scene with cardinals and bluebirds perched on tree branches. Joan claims her hobby doesn't require any more patience than other hobbies. I thought itwasquitea coin- cidence. when 1 learned her lather is one of those people who builds ships in bottles. How he does it is,a well -kept secret.. Egg decorating is an inex- pensive and interesting hob- by. Tomorrow morning don't crack that egg discrimenately think of its potential and think small.
