Rehearsals for ugh school production
Tryouts and casting are
finished and the first rehear-
sals are underway, as
students at South Huron
begin four and a half months
of preparation for this year's
school production of
"Grease". May 18-20.
In choosing , the musical
"Grease" co -directors Pat

were trying to appeal to both
students and audience.

South Huron wins
in senior
The South Huron senior
boys basketball surprised
even themselves when they
edged Stratford Central 37-
32 in overtime, Friday night
in Huron -Perth, league ac-
tion. Two foul shots by Steve
Riddell with one second left
in the extra period ensured
the victory for South Huron.
The win evens the
Panthers league record at 1-
1 and marks the second year
in a row that South Huron
has defeated the Ramblers,
Coach Terry O'Rourke's
game plan was instrumental
in the victory. The Panthers
were content to slow the
game down in the first half
and pass the ball around the
perimeter. "It frustrated
them to no end and kept the
crowd sitting on their
hands". said O'Rourke.
A stingy 3-2 zone defence
at the other end of the floor
held Stratford to just 11
points in the first half, while
the Panthers scored 13
points.
Kevin Parsons and John

ding games of the season as
they controlled the boards at

is geared to each student's

training and preparation for
the constructive use of
leisure time throughout
life... while academic dis-
ciplines are pre-eminent, it
is incumbent on us as
educators to provide oppor-
tunities for student develop-
ment in other areas."
The all-inclusive trip,
which will cost students $170
each. has been scheduled for
the middle of the week to
reduce costs and avoid
weekend tow lineups.
Newton expects fewer
behaviour problems this
year than in previous years
because of the three suspen-
sions handed out last year to
students caught drinking on
the trip. "Usually it's a pret-

Loundes finds producing a
musical at a school with no
vocal or instrumental music
program. let alone a teacher
with musical qualification,
rather frustrating.
"Acting is our strength,
and that is what we'll have
to concentrate on" said
Loundes. Annette Cann, a
Grade 19 student, has taken
on the demanding job of
music director for the
musical.
A member of the English
department, Loundes also
has misgivings about the
choice of • musicals. "It's
frustrating to think we're go-
ing to spend four months
rehearsing and still come up
with nothing but a piece of
fluff". he said.
With this in mind, he's
considering satirizing or
ironizing the musical's
moral that happiness comes
with conformity and accep-
tance. He also cautions that
the musical will be based on
the original broadway ver-
sion which used rock and roll
of the 1950's, not the movie,
which highlighted John
▪ Travolta and the disco music
of the late 1970's.
