Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh Sports dinner The ninth annual Exeter Lions Sportsmen's dinner will be with us again in less than three weeks. It's scheduled for the South Huron Rec Centre on Tuesday, February 2 and that day in addition to the lito a d hog seeing his shadow area sports fans have a chance to meet a wide variety of their heroes. Under the capable leadership of dinner chairman Doug Knowles, this ninth dinner promises to be as big or bigger than any of the previous events. Starting at the beginning with the master of ceremonies the Lions have made an excellent choice in bringing in Father Joe Nelligan to introduce the celebrities. Father Nelligan, the parish priest of Mount Carmel is fast becoming famous in theareas as an after d&nner speaker and as master of ceremonies he is sure to"do a lot more than just say who the next speaker is. Nelligan, a former college coach in Windsor and a resident of California also has a wide knowledge of sports and will put that -to great use in not only infor- ming but amusing the expected large crowd. The headline speaker will be former New York Yankee pitcher Jim Bouton who wrote the controver- sial book "Ball Four" in which he made some unkind remarks about some of his former Yankee team- mates including Mickey Mantle. At the moment professional hockey will be represented by former Montreal Canadiens executive Sam Pollock. He is probably one of the shrewdest men ever involved in' the administrative end of the ice game and is well knowen for making many trades \.-/which always seem to turn out to be very beneficial to the Montreal club. Exeter native Dave Shaw who is having a very successful season with the Kitchener Rangers will be here along with team-mate Brian Bellows who is ex- pected to be the number one draft pick in the next NHL draft. From the world of baseball comes Joe Char- bonneau from the Cleveland Indians and at least one representative from the Toronto Blue Jays, probably their new manager Bobby Cox. Representing Canadian football will be former Western Mustang great John Priestner who is now with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, John Glassford from the Ottawa Roughriders and of course the old standby Glenn Weir of the Montreal Alouettes. This will be Weir's seventh appearance at the local dinner. He has been coming to the local event almost as many years as he has been a valued member of the Alouettes defensive line. ' Appearing on behalf of harness racing will be Dr. Jobn'Hsyes who:has been a breeder, trainer and driver on the Jockey Club circuit for many years. Hayes is alsoa part owner of Conquered, one of the top pacerA in recent years. Tickets for the big dinner are now on sale and available from any member of the Exeter Lions club. The price this year is $30 for adults and a portion of this is deductible for income tax purposes. • Considering the London dinner the night before • with -a very similar list of guest speakers is selling for $50., the local price of $0 is certainly a bargain. All Stars Saturday The annual Ontario Hockey Association Western Junior "D" all star game is set for Saturday night at the Lucan Community Centre. The best players on the six teams in the northern division will meet the top competitors from the five clubs in the southern section. The two divisions this year are pretty well evenly matched so the all star game should provide and ex- cellent brand of hockey. At the time of writing the Exeter Hawks and Tavistock Braves are tied forfirstplace in the north group with 43 points apiece while the Thamesford Trojans and. Belmont Bombers are all even in the south in a 38 point deadlock. +. ••• • t • . '• • . Four games played To be completed January 30 Storm cancels final day of Hawks junior Tourney The Exeter Hawks annual Junior "D" tournament was one of the victims of the weekend blizzard as weather conditions forced postponement of Sunday's semi-final and final .games. Coach Ron Bogart said tentative plans call for the event to be concluded on Saturday, January 30. The Hawks made it to the semi-final round with a 6-4 win over Southampton and they'll meet Port Dover, who disposed of Mitchell by a 8a count. The other two semi- finalists are Thamesford and Thedford. Thamesford dumped Lucan 6-5 with two goals in the final three minutes, while Thedford scored seven times in the final period to oust Grand "Valley by a 13-6 verdict. Stormy conditions on Saturday kept the crowd count down. In the opener, Thamesford scored twice in the final three minutes to post a 6-5 win over the Lucan Irish, who had rebounded from a 4- 2 deficit to take the lead at the 16:23 mark of the final frame. 'Thamesford tied it up at the 17:09 mark and got the winner 39 seconds later to send the Irish to the sidelines. .34 OPENING FACEOFF — Exeter mayor Bruce Shaw officially opened the weekend Hawk junior tournament. Above, Show drops the puck between the sticks of Greg Peck of Thamesford and Paul Wraith of the Lucan Irish. _ T -A photo Locals lose Hawks battle The Exeter Hawks dropped a 4-2 decision in Mitchell Tuesday in their only league outing of the week. A show -down with Tavistock Braves scheduled for the rec centre, Friday, failed to materialize when the Braves phoned a couple of hours before game time and cancelled. • The Hawks and Braves are tied for first in the northern division, but the Tavistock crew have three games in A Sick Situation The controversy in Toronto between the Toronto Maple Leafs and their captain Darryl Sittler continues with very little change to be expected in the near future. The latest is that Sittler is out of the lineup because he is sick. Likely sick of the Leafs and owner HaroldBallard. Lots can be said on both sides of this argument. On the Sittler side of the coin, he has had a number of differences of opinion with management and has asked to be traded especially after Ballard was critical of the play of Laurie Boschman. In defence of the Leafs it can be said that they are and should be asking for their money's worth in a trade for Sittler. He and his agent'Allan Eagleson have said heis one of the best forwards in the league. If thats the case the Leafs should get at least two current top line players. • If a satisfactory trade cannot be made, Sittler should be expected to play to the best of his ability as long as he is a member of the Maple Leaf organization. After all, he is a professional with a reasonably lucrative contract. We would guess that there are a lot of athletes that are not altogether pleased with some of the antics and statements of their owners and management, but, they give out one hundred percent not only for their own benefit but for that of the team and their team-mates. Probably the best way to bring the current tur- bulence in Toronto to an end would be for the fans to boycott the games and hit the team and mangement where it hurts in the pocket book. It doesn't seem to matter the brand of hockey served up by the Leafs an empty seat at the Gardens is almost unheard of. This week there were several classified ads in the Globe and Mail asking for tickets to Leafs games. 1 hand. The trip to Mitchell was the last scheduled one for the Hawks this season, The two teams are now even in their four games to date, Exeter winning two of the three in Mitchell and the latter taking. the lone en- counter in Exeter. The first period was all even with Brian Maher scoring for Hensall on a pass from Dwight Consitt while Doug Todd converted a pass from Bill Hodge for the Marauders. In the second period Todd counted, again for Centralia this time on•a pass from Rick Funston and Terry Caldwell put the Sherwoods on even terms again as he completed a three-way passing com- bination with Jamie Cald- well and Allan Taylor on a power play. The Sherwoods went in front at 13.05 of the third period on Terry Caldwell's second successful shot of the game on a play set up by Gary Kyle.
