Hawks get two wins, hold three
The Exeter Hawks won
both their games this week,
opening up a three-point lead
over Tavistock in the
northern division of the
Junior "D” loop.
However, the Braves now
have three games in hand
over the locals.
Sunday's scheduled show-
down between the top two
teams was cancelled by the
Tasiistock club and will be
rescheduled for later in the
season.
Exeter played in Mitchell
last night and will face
Tavistock at the rec centre
on Friday in the final home
game against the Biaves.
The locals will host their an-
nual tournament on Satur-
day and Sunday.
The Hawks, with only 11
games left in the schedule,
have been riddled with in-
juries and sickness.
Midget netminder Peter
Dearir)g has filled in capably
for hegulars Rich Fletcher
and Mike Tadgell. Dearing
was in the nets for the wins
over Lucan and Seaforth this
week and was one of the
main tactors in the victory
over the Irish.
The Hawks have been
without the services' of
Kerry • Bedard and Doug
Brooks for several games
and on Friday they were
joined by Ed Willis, Preston
Dearing, Brian Baker and
Rick Lindenfield.
Willis was banged �u�p in a
game against ' l'hedford a
week ago, while Dearing and
Baker were injured in the
game against Lucan.
Lindenfield departed from
the Friday game against
Seaforth with a hand injury
when he stopped a shot.
Pizza Train splits
The Exeter Pizza Train
house league bantams broke
even in two tournament
games played in Strathroy
over the holidays.
In the first game, the Ex-
eter youngsters defeated
Ilderton 7-2 and in the second
it was 5-2 loss to Lucan.
Four of the seven Exeter
goals in the win over Ilder-
ton came on power plays.
Tim Fowler led the Pizza
Train scoring attack with a
three goal effort with Jim-
my Lewis close behind with
two goals to his credit.
The other Exeter goals
were fired by Andy Lerikos
and Marty Taylor. Picking
up assists were Lewis,
Fowler, Terry Zachar and
Scott Baptist.
Scoring for Exeter in the
loss to Lucan were Tim
Fowler and Steve Pym on
passes from Bob Sims, Allan
Pym and Andy Lerikos.
Rick Emery was the top
Lucan marksman with a
three goal performance. Ad-
ding single goals were Dave
Manders and Mike Gillan.

the winner as the Hawks
scored a 3-2 win over
S^aforth at the rec centre,
Friday.
The goal gave the locals a
3-1 lead, but Seatorth
narrowed the gap to one _
when they scored on a power
play at the 12:20 mark of the
final period. The
Centenaires had a two-man
advantage at the time.
John Kernick got the
Hawks oft to a one -goal lead
and were not eligible for the
second contest.
In league play, Saturday,
the Pizza Train boys edged
Mitchell 7-6 and blanked St.
Marys 3-0.
In the win over Mitchell,
Jim Lewis and Tim Fowler
led the Exeter scoring with
two goals apiece. Scoring in
single fashion were Bob
Sims, Ray Chong and Scott
Baptist. The latter also add-
ed two assists. Helping on
one goal apiece,were Chong,
Sims, Terry Zachar and
Steve Pym.
Notching one goal each in
the victory over St. Marys
were Jim Lewis, Tim
Fowler and Scott Baptist.
Assisting were Lewis, Terry
Zachar and Allan Pym.
In the Huron -Perth house
league standings, Exeter
leads with six points while
Mitchell no. 2 has four
points, Hensall two points
and Clinton and Mitchell No.
1 with one point each.
Tim Fowler leads the Ex-
eter scorers in overall play
with 13 goals and five assists
for 18 points and five assists
for 17 points. Scott Baptist
and Andy Lerikos are next
with 11 points each and Mar-
ty Taylor has 10.

mates and a Seaforth
defender as screens,
Johnston bit the open corner
behind Dan McClure for the
winner at' the 2:43 mark of
the final period,

assists In the game for Ex-
eter, while notching singles
were Brian Mercer, Tuckey,
Bill Glover and Dave Atthill.
Peter Dearing stopped 28
of the 30 shots fired in his
direction to remain un-
defeated in four starts for
the Hawks.
Exeter served eight of the
12 minor penalties called.
Playing in Lucan, Wednes-
day. the Hawks scored their
fifth straight win over the
Irish by a 5-4 count.
Peter Dearing kept the
Hawks in the game in the
first period when they were
out -shot by a 19-10 margin
and managed to escape with
a 2-2 draw.
The Hawks scored three
unanswered tallies in the
middle frame and then hung
on as the Irish scored a pair
in the final 20 minutes, both
on power plays.
Exeter played the final
seven minutes short-handed
as Preston Dearing picked
up nine minutes in penalties
when he was involved in a
skirmish with John Medd.
Medd was assessed only two
minutes.
Peter Dearing ended up
with 46 saves, while Ed
Dobinson of the Irish record-
ed 33 saves in the wide-open
affair.
Scoring for Exeter were
Rick Lindenfield, Pete
Tuckey, Preston Dearing,
Larry Dawson and Paul
Johnston. Johnston's goal
was the game winner.
Brian Mercer, Dave
Atthill and Dave Couse had
two assists each for the
Hawks, while adding singles
were Lindenfield and Tony
Underhill.
Jamie Shipley scored
twice for the Irish and the
singles were recorded by
Steve Glenn and John Medd.

Panthers reach
consolation final
The South Huron senior
boys' basketball team kept
their composure to win 46-43
in overtime against West
Elgin and advance to the
consolation final of the
fourth annual Holiday
Classic Tournament
Wednesday in Parkhill.
The Panthers felt the
absence of standout guard
Dave Woodward in the final
as they were beaten 76-25 in
the final by last year's
tournament champions,
Westminster Wildcats.
A 20 foot basket by George
Tomes and two foul shots by
Mike Maier in the final
seconds gave the Panthers.
-the margin they needed over
West Elgin. "It's nice to win
for a change," said coach
Terry O'Rourke after the
game. The win was only the
third so far this season for
the struggling team.After
trailing 21-14 at the half,
South Huron came roaring
back in the third quarter to
lead 35-24 halfway through
the fourth frame. John
McAllister led the Panthers
with 15 points, while Dave
Woodward and John Mol had
11 and 6 points respectively.
In the first round, South
Huron lost 40-37 to host
Parkhill, after having lead
by five points with two
minutes left. Centre John
Mol led the Panthers with
nine points. Dave Woodward
and Kevin Parsons had 8 and
7 points respectively.
South Huron will be
without the services of Ian
Sweet when they travel to
Stratford Central for a
regular season contest,
Friday. Sweet injured his
knee in the game against
West Elgin.

Midgets win
In an exhibition contest at
the rec centre, Saturday, the
local midgets scored a 6-3
win over Huron Park,
gaining some revenge for
two earlier losses to the
samt, !tam.
Scott Brin' ,-11 paced the
attack with three goals and
an assist. Potting single
tallies were Steve Batten,
Mike Tiedeman and Ahmad
Osmon.
Dave Hayter and Brent
Atthill added two assists
each, while Greg Hern and
Tiedeman had one.
Tony Jones scored two for
Huron Park and added one
