Rock heundY collection fills garage, bo.amenr—
Collectors value rocks' natural beaut

You start out with a
pocketful of marbles Ken
Breakey says. Every time
you see an attractive ne
or rock, you exchange it for
a marble.
Wben you've lost all your
marbles - then you're a rock
hound.
A visit with Ken and
1sk
Dorothylliea Breakey
Zurich
guided tour ofthe
geology of North America.
They are in "their own
words, rock hounds - collec-
tors of rock samples, fossils,
crystals and unique mineral
formations.
For Mu. Breakey, her in-
terest in rocks began at an
early age.
Her father was an office
worker for the International
Nickle Company and
Dorothy was born at the
Levee mines north of Sud-
bury.
Not surprisingly her rock
collection includes core
samples - rods of rock drill-
ed out by miners searching
for mineral deposits -
samples of raw ore and ex-
amples of slag. the melted

remainder of the rock from
which the valuable metals
have been extracted.
The majority of the
Breakey's collection
however are rocks treasured
more for their colorful con-
figurations than any mineral
value.
In a converted garage next
to their Zurich home, dis-
play cases and shelves fill
half the area.'
The rocks on display,
Dorothy explained, are often
just a single sample of a box
or basket full of similar
rocks stored' in the base-
ment:
The . sam-ples are
numbered and records of
what the sample is and
where it was found are kept.
A really good geologist
Ken said. can tell. within a
mile of where a sample of an
odd rock formation was
found.'
He believes this is •so, he
added. since even with his
experience he can tell if a
rock is from Mexico, or a
state in the US.
One type of volcanic for-
mation, a geode, appears on
the outside as a rather non-
descript round rock. When
cot or broken open however,
crystals or wood -grain -like
patterns are revealed.
The back of the garage is
Ken's workroom where a 24
inch diamond saw Ken
designed and built is
mounted.
"It works' just like a
bologna slicer," Ken
quipped.
The saw is powered by
three electric motors. •
The first turns a 24 inch
diameter steel blade. In the
edges of the blade are
mounted hard and sharp in-
dustrial diamonds. •
To sharpen the blade, Ken
runs a brick through the
cutter. This is abrasive
enough to just de -glaze the
blade to make it usable
again.
A second motor feeds the
rock sample onto the blade
at a constant speed of eft
minutes per inch. In other'
words. a four inch rock can
be cut in just over a half-
hour. '
The thirli motor runs an oil
pump to spray a streamofoil
over the cutting section of
the blade.
The joy of the hobby Ken
says is the surprise of what's
inside the rock.
One type is aptly timed
Mexican Crosy Lace. When
sliced and poWlied the rock
has a co orful lace like
pattern.
. Another slice, when held
up. to a light shows the
profile of an Indian and
maiden. both in full feather-
like headdress.
Breakey uses his saw to
cut cubes of rock. The cor-
ners of the rock are thencut
off to make an octahedron.
In all. 58 saw cuts on the
rock form it into a rough
sphere.
A second machine uses
three grades of hard rock
grit to grind the rock into a
sphere. A polish grit makes
a perfect ball.
Other machines tumble
irregular shaped pieces
smooth or. polish .flat sur-
faces.
The smoother the saw cut
Dorothy said, the less time
is required to polish the sam-
ple.
Still, three grades of grit
and a polish are used to br-
ing the stones to a mirror-
like luster.
When polished correctly, a
stone can be held up to a 60
watt light bulb and used as a
mirror to read the printing
on the bulb.

The surprise of a rock's in-
terior is also a matter of
luck.
When cutting a cube- of
Brazilian Agate, Ken decid-
ed to grind off a rough edge
by hand. Since the rock is
ground wet it was very
slippery.
After picking up the pieces
from a hard concrete floor,
Breakey ran.thechunks
through his saw .to salvage
what he could.
A quarter -inch slice, from
the original 33/4 inch cube
revealed a beautiful pattern.
In a cream color a
woman's profile is outlined.
She has long flowing hair in
the darkest black. She is
wearing a flowing dress in
deep red.
She seems to look over her
shoulder to other less defin-
ed people in the background.
Though Dorothy 'says it
•takes a lot of imagination -to
see scenes in the rock, this
picture is clear in its feeling
if not in detail.
The names of the rocks
reflect . their configuration
and their origins.
To the Breakey's the rocks
also reflect travels.
A yellow stone was picked

ROCK CUTTER

- - Ken Breakey stands beside the saw he built to cut rock samples Thr

Montana.
The couple returned from
their 1969 trip with 400
pounds of rock in the back of
their car.
A gift for the Breakey's
35th wedding anniversary
was -a 1978 trip to Alaska.
The shelves of their rock
collection reflect their
progress through the Cana-
dian west. the Yukon and
finally the Alaskan moun-
tains. -
Ken hada stroke about ten
years ago, which Dorothy
explained had curtailed their
ability to travel.
But she said just meeting
people and talking to friends
at the Sarnia Rock and
Fossil Club has prompted
donations to their collection.
Dorothy told of samples
from Turkey and a piece of
shale from a famous
medieval prison in France.
One friend even offered to
get a piece of the rock from
the Great Wall of China.
Both agreed that the hobby
was good therapy for Ken.
It helped him recover as
well as he did from his
stroke._ Dorothy said.
Ken was able to return to
work and his life's work in
electronics is also reflected
in his hobby. .
The mountings for the dia-
mond saw were built out of
angle iron from an old
transmitter tower.
Breakey said he gets as
much enjoyment out of
designing and building his
tools as he does in the rocks.
His interests he said were
directed more towards
agates and petrified woods
and machining rock spheres.
Dorothy he said, collects
petrified bones and fossils.
Dorothy showed samples
of dinosaur bones - fairly
young on the fossil scale -
and sections of sedimentary
rock showing trilobites and
ancient marine life.
"It doesn't have to begetn
quality." Dorothy explained.
She said she was interested
