Christmas Poem
By Tracy Ford
Grade 8
Mt. Carmel
On Christmas day.
The children will play,
With hearts that are gay.
The ladies will sit,
By the fire and knit,
With Christmas tree lit.
They will all go home.
And remember the day.

Heap on more wood •- the

But let it whistle as it will,
We'll keep our Christmas

Sir Walter Scott penned
those lines more than 150
years ago and they still app-
ly in our, country's return to
wood stoves and fireplaces.
A great many people this
Christmas are facing a bleak

But let it whistle! It is the
time of year when so much
of th' spirit of the Christ -
child hovers close to the
hearts of men and women.
We'll keep our Christmas
merry still. We will, too. We
will all try not to think of the
tangled affairs of mankind
around the world. We will
sing and be merry and go
carolling and hug and kiss
old friends and family
members we have not seen
perhaps, since last year.
We will forget some of our
differences. at least fora day
or two. and let this wonder-
ful time of year seep into our
minds and hearts
remembering that God's -
great gift to mankind, His

Ah. the wonderment of
another Christmas...so
many of them now, all ex-
cept two or three that bring
fond memories flooding into
mind and perhaps some
tears flooding into the eyes.
The memories? Too
numerous to mention them
all.
But what about that
Christmas so many years
ago when a big. battery -
powered fire truck was un-
der the tree...and the year of
the new tube skates...and the
year Alice and I were first
married...and the year our
own children shared our
wonderment.
I think of the struggles my
parents had bringing up a
family of five in the Depres-

think of my Dad's workworn
hands and my mother's lov-
ing smile.
I think of the 33 Christ-
mases my own helpmate has
shared with me and thank
God for her and for three
gorgeous girls and four
delightful grandchildren.
And just before I go in the
door. I will say a prayer of
thanksgiving for what will

CHRISTMAS IN THE
OLDEN DAYS
By Christine Parsons
Usi erne Central
Leong ago when my grand-
parents celebrated Christ-
mas. they went to bed at
about 8:06. Before they went
to bed they hung up their
stockings.
They were very excited
about Christmas Day and
about learning about Christ
and getting presents. Their
parents decorated the tree
while they were sleeping.
They were used to getting
little presents, they needed,
like nightgowns, socks or
stockings
The tree had decorations
but not a lot. They usually
strung popcorn to decorate
their trees. In the morning
they woke up and looked in
their stockings.
They would find in their
stockings little things like
pens or pencils for school
and oranges for a treat.
On their Christmas tree
there were no lights and they
even had to make some of
their decorations. My grand-
mother's mother made some
of their gifts but bought
most of them:
They got more clothing
than toys and always got
something they needed in
clothing.
They were used to getting
two to four gifts. Well they
had a lot of fun. back then
and we also do -now. Merry
Christmas! .

HOW CHRISTMAS SHOULD BE
By Brenda Balsdon•
Room 10-E.P.S.
1 think Christmas should
be a more joyful day. We
should have parades all
around the town. sing carols,
play tunes and show off toys.
After that. everyone should
go back home and the
children should do skits,
plays. dances. magic shows
and things like that for their
family and neighbours.
Then. having a big turkey
dinner with relatives and
worshipping the Lord would
make the Christmas Day
complete.

SANTA'S WORKSHOP
By Jared Siebert
Grade 2 Zurich P.S.
One winter day I was going
for a walk.
Out of nowere was a little
house. I wanted to go and
look into the window.
I did see Santa Claus and
his elves.
Santa Claus was on a chair
and the elves were at work.
They were very busy getting
ready for Christmas.
