Clarence McDowell, owner of C.A. McDowell Con- struction of Exeter, is retiring from the business after 30 years of work. He will, however, continue to operate the Ready -Mix concrete business on High- way 83 West which he started eight years ago. McDowell auctioned off his equipment and tools - some 600 separate items all told - Friday at his Exeter yard. The crowded yard was over- run by buyers and interested shoppers who raised hoods, inspected truck and tractor bodies, and searched carefully for bargains in the booklet listing all mer- chandise for sale. McDowell has worked all across Ontario, but some major work was also done here in Exeter. He rebuilt Main Street sofrte nine years ago from Huron Street to A Thamesroad. He also built the nurses' residence which is the dental clinic today. The remodelling and ex- pansion of the former town post office (no municipal office) is also his work. "We did some of work in virtually every small town in this area - Clinton, Goderich, Zurich, Seaforth," he said. Going further afield, his crews have travelled to communities like Chalk River, Sioux Lookout, and Mount Joy, near Timmins. The Chalk River contract was the largest in memory, he said; it was for a sanitary sewer system and was worth 11 -million. The men finished it in one season, starting in May and finishing by December. As business grew, so did his payroll. At the peak, McDowell had about 130 men working for him. Contractors like him are constantly bidding on jobs, he said. "When we finished one job, we just load up and move the equipment to another. Sometimes there is a delay before we can start excavating due to paper- work, but we were always busy." As a rule, contractors work in the summer months but McDowell occasionally had to continue through the ` winter. "It's tough on the' machines and tough on the men. They can't work as fast as before," he said. McDowell has seen some good workers under him, too. Wayne Gregg, his super- visor, has 19 years of service with him. Wayne Ford, an equipment operator and Allan Becker, each have 15 years of experience with the company. His workers now number only about 15, and they should be able to find work with other contractors in the spring, he said. McDowell moved his equipment yard to Exeter 10 years ago from Centralia, where he lives with his wife. They have one daughter living in Oakville.
