By MRS. E. SUMMERS
At the United Church the
service for the third Sunday
in Advent, which was also
White Gift Sunday was put
on by the Sunday School. The
theme was "The Littlest
Star".
The service opened with a
prelude of Christmas Carols
with John Phillips playing
his trumpet and Mrs. Elwyn
Bryan at the organ. The Call
to Worship with responses,
was led by Sunday School
teacher Douglas Brown,
Teacher Mrs. Robt Garrett
gave a short talk on the
Constellation illustrated with
slides.
Following the Christmas
anthem by the senior choir, a
presentation was put on by
pupils, Heidi Hayden, Danny
Scott, Paul Brown, Valerie
Squire, Teddy Mills and
Pamela Waters all
representing different
constellations and carrying
lights. This was narrated by
Amy Waugh.
In the "Nativity scene"
Jenifer Chovancek was
Mary, Eleanore Kop was
Joseph, the shepherd was
Andrea Urlin and the three
wisemen were Becky Bryan,
Mark Humphrey and
Johnathon Hill.
During the singing of
"Away in the Manger" the
children placed their White
Gifts in a container at the
front of the church and while
the offering was being taken
up Mr. Phillips favored with
two beautiful trumpet solos.
He also accompanied Mrs.
Bryan throughout the ser-
vice.
Steven Cook performed the
ceremony of lighting all
three candles. in the advent
wreath, the first was in
memory of Ezekiel and
Elizabeth, John the Bap-
tist's parents, the second for
Mary and Joseph and the
third for the Angels. The
Rev. Morden thanked
everyone who had taken part
in the service, especially the
teachers for all the work
this had entailed.
A touching story related by
superintendent Mrs. Leroy
Bryan entitled "The Littlest
Angel" really held the
children's attention. The
junior choir sang "Did you
see what I saw," then
Douglas Brown concluded
the service with a
Thanksgiving prayer and
pronounced the blessing with
responses by the
congregation. ,
At the St. Thomas
Anglican Church the Rev.
Greg Smith conducted the
Service of the Nine Lessons
and Carols for the third
Sunday in Advent.
The ceremony of the
lighting of the third candle in
the Advent Wreath was
performed by. Sylvia
Beatson. The nine lessons
were read by Susan Noon,
Ken Hoar, Mrs. Lois Her-
bert, Jim Hodgins, Mrs. C.
Lewis, Kenny Beatson, Mrs.
P. Hodgins, Steven Ready,
The Rector.
The children under 5 went
downstairs to the Church
Hall, the others were invited
to remain upstairs for the
lessons and carols. There
was no sermon.
A reminder that next
Sunday St. Thomas will be
having the special Children's
service, followed by the
parish pot luck lumcheon for
Christmas. Everyone is
welcome.
The annual C.G.I.T.
Vesper Service will be held
on Sunday, December 20 at
7:30 p.m. in the Granton

U.C.W. general meeting
The Granton U.C.W.
December general meeting
and Christmas dinner was
held in the church basement
on December 8. Following
the meal, president Mrs.

entitled the "Message of
Christmas" followed by a
hymn and prayer. Unit 4 was
in charge of the program,
their president Mrs. Cliff
Hardie opened with a
Christmas reading and
prayer.
The first item on the
program was a hilarious
reading "The School
Christmas Concert" by Mrs.
Floyd Dykes, this depicted
the excitement and un-
foreseen problems that
teachers had long ago In.a
country school house.
This was followed by a skit
which involved most of the
members in.the unit, entitled
"A bachelor's lonely
Christmas," which turned
out far from lonely, as all his
neighbours felt sorry for him
and sent their children over
to cheer him up.
During the business
period, donations were voted
to the board of stewards,
social services and to the
social conveners to purchase
needed utensils 'for the
kitchen. The treasurer's
report showed a successful
year, financially.
