Why pick on Dec. 25th?
Being a `'scrooge" at
Christmas is not the most
effective way to gain friends
and influence people.
I'm amongst the first to
complain when St. Nick and
his antlered ponies come
trotting down main street in
late September. (I know it's
not that early. but gee! He
seems to arrive earlier each
year.)
I'm also amongst the first
to complain that Christmas
come too soon.
The 22nd and 23rd day of
December always seems to
be the day I realize it really
is the Christmas season.
Every year I face the last

In past years I've had a
reasonable excuse. It's real
difficult to think about gift

quick_. i
This year I have no such
excuse. I've thought about
Christmas many times this
year thinking about lists
and presents. but I have yet
to break down and buy a gift.
Early in the Christmas
season. the problem is not
what to huv. hut deciding
what I want.
The demand for a Christ-
mas list has traditionally
come from my mother. But
now a mother. wife and
mother-in-law share the
honors.
(On the other hand. Carol
has been given most of the
burden of deciding gifts - and
1 grow closer to understan-
ding the plight my mother
fares each December.)
It isn't that I'm not as
greedy or wanting as
everybody else - I want
everything But how do you
honestly ask for a new car or
trip to Tahiti for Christmas?
The problem is not that I
dont mind the giving (or
receiving) of gifts. but I do
feel pressured and guilty
about having to ask for
something
1 think the true meaning of
Christmas as a social event
has been lost.
Christmas has many
meanings. While basically a
Christian tradition to
celebrate the birth of the
Christ. the December 25
year and another long
winter.
New Canadians often
adopt the festival and
celebrate Christmas even
though it may have no
religious references for
them.
One of society's many
problems is that we are too
lax in attacking once good
institutions which have gone
had Any critical• appraisal
of the Christmas tradition is
booed down and its speaker
tabled a scrooge.
Thus every year the big
retail stores whittle away
more of Christmas. No one
can object.
1 think Christmas should
be a day of a family and
friends. of good food and
drink.
It should be a time when
all men are friends. when we
can set aside the com-
petitions and problems of
the day to day world.
We can designate some
day in February as gift giv-
ing II.1y. Let some bleak day
in the heart of winter be
brightened by a gift and let
December 25 be free from
the commercialism of greed
and decisions.
Make Cht'istmas the day
New Year's is (sans the
hang -overt: a day of feast
and celebration for a year
gone past and a new year to
come.
Scrooge you say?
Well maybe. but maybe
we could free one day of the
year from the forces of
modern society and give it
hack to the human
necessities of shelter,
nourishment and friendship.
Golden Glimpses
Once again it is the time of
the year when residents and
staff like to take this op-
portunity to wish all of our
readers a Merry Christmas
and a Happy and Prosperous
New Year. We wish to thank
everyone who has been so
faithful in visiting and
bringing treats for the
residents during the year..
On Tuesday evening, the
members of the Hurondale
Institute sponsored the
December birthday party.
Following an enjoyable
program, a delicious lunch
was served. Residents
having birthdays during the
month and receiving gifts,
courtesy of the rest home
auxiliary were Miss Cecil
McLeod, Mrs. Gerda
Lovisendal and Miss
Milverna Geiger.
We regret that Mrs. Edna
Eickmeier and Mrs. Louise
Denomme are patients in St.
Joseph's Hospital, London,
and Mrs. Jane Crone and
Mrs. Maurine Webb are in
South Huron Hospital,
Exeter.
Bingo was played on
Friday evening followed by
refreshments.
The 2nd Brownie Pack of
Exeter visited the residents
on Saturday afternoon and
gave each resident a
Christmas card ac-
companied by a gift. I know
the residents appreciated it
very much, as well as the
program that they
presented.
On Sunday evening, the
chapel service was con-
ducted by Rev. Stuart Miner
of Exeter. Mrs. Ann Brodie
presided at the organ during
the service.

Stanley sets '82 pay rates
Stanley Township
employees will be getting
pay increases of ap-
proximately 12 percent in
1982.
At council meetings
December 7 and 14, the '82
wages were approved.
The roads superintendent
will receive a pay increase
to $9.75 per hour from $8.15
in 1981.
The grader operator will
receive $8.75, up from 57.70.
The truck driver will now be
making $8.50 up from $7.60
last year.
Casual help in the
township will be'paid $7 per
hour in 1982, up from $6.25
this year.
Clerk Mel Graham said
the raise for the roads
superintendent was higher
than the 12 percent es-
timated to increase the
spread between the super-
visor and his workers.
Graham said his own
salary will be increased to
$18.600 from $16,600. This in-
cludes an office and car
allowance.
The assistant clerk's
wages will increase to $9,600
from $8,000.
In tax related matters,
council decided to collect
taxes only twice in 1982.
The first payment has
been moved forward to
come due on March 15. The
second payment comes due
November 15.
Graham said the township
also plans to pass a by-law
establishing a minimum tax
bill of $10.
Though no action has yet
been taken. council met with
Peter Jackson of the
ministry of intergovenmen-
tal affairs to discuss tax
registration procedures.
Graham said the township
may go to the registration
system rather than a tax -
sale system to collect back
taxes.
Seven tile drainage
application totalling 543,000
were accepted by council
and a bylaw was passed to
allocate $23,000 to four
applications for the drainage

Christmas concert
fills Varna hall
by MARY CHESSELL
The township hall was
packed on Sunday with
parents, grandparents,
great-grandparents, aunts
and uncles of the students for
the Sunday School's ex-
cellent concert.
The stage was filled with
students for the opening
numbers.
Rev. Wilena Brown was
master of ceremonies, and
read interesting excerpts
from a selection of Christ-
mas news items in the 1880's
to keep the audience en-
tertained during set
changes.
Recitations by the
following children were
interspersed throughout the
programme: Mary Ellen -
Webster, Sandra Coultis,
Mark Webster, David Rath -
well, Chris Taylor, Suzanne
Stephenson, Raymond
Beierling, Krista McAsh,
Shelley Stephenson, Jason
McAsh, Darryn McAsh,
Greg Taylor and Paul Hill.
Especially funny were
Chris Taylor, prior to saying
his piece, responding to
directions from behind the
curtain with"good and loud?
Real loud!" And loud and
clearly he spoke. Shelley
Stephenson wound up with
"My dad would like to meet
the teacher who can make an
"angel" out of me!"
All of the children knew
their recitations well and
spoke out well. Besides the
fun they have, it's excellent
training for them.
The smallest children,
dressed up for the Parade of
the Wooden Soldiers were
adorable. The junior class
helped Santa spell happy
words without the "i" that
was missing from Merry
Christmas. The Christmas
detectives found Santa's
missing things In his winter
underwear."I Love You"
helped the forgetful Santa
remember his "Ho, ho, ho!"
The senior class explained
why Christmas had been
cancelled, and when father
(Jim Hill) blew the dust off
the family Bible (and there
were great clouds of it) and
read the Christmas story,
Christmas became a joyful
reality again.
Santa arrived at just the
right time and distributed
gifts and candy canes to all
of the children.
