By Jack Riddell MPP
The Government of On-
tario continues to ignore the
plight of the farmers caught
in the stranglehold of un-
bearable high interest rates.
Few farming operations can
survive under the present
economic conditions. In per-
sistent questioning to the
Minister of agriculture and
Food and the Treasurer.
Frank Miller, I have pointed
out that this inaction is
leading to the total dis-
integration of our
agriculture industry.
It is regrettable that the
Minister of Agriculture Mr.
Henderson. is forcing the
farmers to lash out through
his lack of action. A major
demonstration by farmers
occurred in Owen Sound a
few weeks ago.
Last week some 150
farmers blocked off
Highway 417 east of Ottawa.
And this week, a demonstra-
tion of over 500 farmers and
concerned citizens took
place at Port Elgin in
Western Ontario.
Jack's Jottings
Ignore plight of farmers
The Minister of
Agriculture. Mr. Henderson.
continues to reply that he
has provided some limited
assistance to the beef in-
dustry. but ignores that fact
that the overriding concern
facing all sectors of the
agriculture industry in this
province is high interest
rates.
The Emergency Task
Force on Agriculture of the
Ontario Federation of.
Agriculture in their recent
report to the government
stressed that the farmers
are facing an "emergency"
situation and that irn-
mediate government action
is required.
The longer the Minister
delays financial assistance
programs, the greater the
number of our efficient
farmers that are forced into
bankruptcy,
Stocker cattle program ex-
panded
Having alluded to the
limited assistance to the
beef industry I would like to
advise that coverage under
the Ontario's Stocker Cattle
Assistance Program has
been increased to allow ad-
ditional beef producers to
participate in it. -
The program was initially
open only to those farmers
who bought at least 10
calves. raised them in On-
tario for at least 150 days,
and then sold them for
finishing purposes when they
weighed 600 pounds or more.
Those farmers were eligi-
ble to receive a grant of 120
per head of cattle. The
program • is now open to all
farmers who sold 10 head of
beef cattle for finishing in
1980 - whether they were
bought as calves or raised by
the farmers themselves.
Amended application
forms for the Stocker Cattle
Assistance Program are
now available in agricultural
offices throughout Ontario.

Property tax grants
While many senior citizens
are upset and angry about
long delays in receiving
property tax grants, ap-
parently the Ministry of
Revenue has paid out more
than 11.3 million in such
grants to people who are in-
eligible to receive them. The
overpayments in the first
year of the program were
sent due to a variety of com-
puter errors, human mis-
takes and lack of program
co-ordination.
Moreover, many senior
citizens are complaining
that it is almost impossible
to get through on the
telephone number published
for enquiries, and many
have suggested that several
more lines or 'phone
numbers are urgently need-
ed.
Ron Van Horne, Liberal
London North, stressing the
number of problems in this
connection which have come
to his attention, said the
senior citizens are calling
for more than platitudes.
"They want to get some ac-
tion".
Liquor licence board
The Minister of Consumer
and Commerical Relations,
Mr. Cord Walker, has told
the Legislature that the
provincial auditor was asked
in the summer of 1980 to
review the operations of the
Liquor Licence Board of On-
tario because the Govern-
ment felt "some matters
had gone awry".
It now appears that a con-
sulting firm was hired by a
senior official of the Board
(whose wife worked for the
(irm), was paid thousands of
dollars for work that, it
seems has never been done.
According to the provincial
auditor. a former executive
director of the LIBO ordered
"questionable" hospitality
for people doing regular
business with the Board.
