Score every period
Buckeyes beat Exeter
The Zurich Buckeyes
scored at least two goals in
every period on the way to a
7-4 victory over the Exeter
Mohawks in South Huron
hockey league play at the
Zurich arena. Sunday after-
noon •
In scheduled games this
week. the Buckeyes will be
in Hensall Thursday night to
meet the Mohawks and at
home to the Centralia
Marauders Sunday after-
noon.
Meanwhile the Mohawks
meet the same Marauders in
a home and home series in
Exeter Thursday night and
at the Stephen township
arena. Friday night.
The Buckeyes took a 2-1
lead after the first 20
minutes of play on goals by
Marvin Merner and Paul
Haggitt on passes from Scott
Consitt and Ron Rader.
Replying for the Mohawks
on a three-way passing com-
bination with Brad Daters
and Pete Gill was Mike
Desjardine.
The Buckeyes lead jumped
to 4-1 in the middle frame as

Rowe is
enthused
Although there are only
three players returning from
last year's third place
WOSSA team, junior
volleyball coaches Pat Rowe
and Rae Wild are
enthusiastic about the
squad's prospects.
"With the great number of
new players out this year,
we'll have our work cut out
for us," Rowe commented.
As always, she is having to
start from the beginning
with the basics. "Some of
the feeder schools have
better programs than
others." she said.
As well as returnees Bren-
da Bell, Charlene Verbeek
and Jane Pollock, Rowe is
expecting good prefor-
mances from the Brands
when the team plays
Mitchell, tomorrow, in its'
opening exhibition match.
Pauline Brand, Irene
Brand and Tena Brand have
shown promise in recent
practices. In league play,
which starts in January,
Rowe hopes the team can
finish in the top three in the
Huron division and advance
to the Huron -Perth playoffs.
Juniors
•
improve
"We are -making
progress". said junior boys
basketball coach. Terry
O'Rourke. after the team's
fifth loss in as many games.
The Panthers lost two lop-
sided contests this week.
Tuesday they were beaten
54-9 by a talented London
Westminster squad, while
Thursday's 80-16 loss came
at the hands of Strathroy.
With only one returned
from last year's team,
O'Rourke feels it will take
some time for the players to
gain the experience they
need in order to start win-
ning games. Steve Merner, a
gradute from the midget
ranks. is starting to develop
into a capable ball handler,
according to O'Rouke.
The team opens its regular
season schedule today in
Mitchell against the Blue
Devils
pass from Kris Bedard and
captain John Graham
registered with passing help
from Mike Clarke and
Gerald W1'eldo.
Each team scored three
goals in the closing period as
the Buckeyes were able to
maintain their three goal
margin
Jeff Fuller was on the fir-
ing end of two of the final
three Mohawk scores and
Luc Gagnon notched the
other goal. Tont Ryan
assisted on all three goals
anct single assists were pick-
ed up by Mike Clarke and
Doug Fletcher.
Mike Clarke scored on a
solo dash for Zurich and
Steve Bedour and Marvin
Merrier tallied on passes
from John Graham, Greg
Kirk. Ron Rader and Scott
Consitt.
The Buckeyes took eight of
the 13 minor penalties called
by referees Brian Campbell
and George Tryon.

HEAVY GOING - Slippery field conditions added to the thrills and spills in the second an-
nual "Toilet Bowl" football game at the SHDHS football field, Saturday. It also added to
the laundry bills for the players. However, as the photos show, the ball carriers were sent
sprawling with some solid tackles and a few sliding saves.

Expect strong team
Senior girls volleyball
With a nucleus of nine
returnees and four able
junior graduates this year's
senior girls' volleyball team
should be just as strong as
last year's team, which was
fifth in Huron -Perth, "We
need another setter to com-
plement Lisa Miller," said
Joe Fulop, who is sharing
coaching duties with Pete
Zankowski.
Zankowski, who is in his
first year of teaching at
South Huron, is doing the ac-
tual instruction, which Fulop
has assumed the job of
"managing" the team.
Although Fulop has all but
conceded the Huron -Perth
title to Stratford Central,
which has six team
members that play year
round, he feels more game
experience will give the
competitive edge they need
to at least play with teams
like Stratford.
To this end, Fulop has
scheduled more than a 100
games for the team, in-
cluding tournaments in St.
Thomas, Wingham, London
and Listowel.
Although the team will
play exhibition matches,
tomorrow in Mitchell, the 24
game league schedule won't
begin until after Christmas.
