Waxers Get Good Start The Exeter Waxers competing in the Silver Stick novice hockey tournament are off to a flying start. Over the weekend in Parkhill, the Waxers won their first two games over Mitchell and Lambeth and qualified for the next round which is the regional final. Their next game will be played on January 3. Before that the Waxers will •be involved in their own novice tournament to be held at the South Huron Rec Centre on Boxing Day and the next day. A total of 13 teams will be in for the two day event and fans are assured of lots of exciting action. Here's a good chance to cheer to your heart's content and probably wear off some of the over abundance of calories gained from Christmas dinner.. A complete schedule of the tourney along with a picture of the Waxers will appear in next week's issue. The Pooley Report One of the recent weekly reports from Columbus, Ohio on the Ohio State hockey Buckeyes features a story on Paul Pooley. After the first 14 games for the Buckeyes, Paul Pooley has 10 goals and five assists for 15 points while twin brother Perry has three goals and the same number of assists. The feature on Paul is as follows: If Ohio State's Paul Pooley participated in some type of hockey scoring contest, he'd probably win every time. After all, the buckeye sharp -shooter led OSU in scoring last year with 60 points, and was co - recipient of Rookie -of -the -Year honors in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. But scoring points is not the Exeter, Ontario native's only strong suit. He has several others. "It sort of bothers me that I'm just noted for scor- ing points," said Pooley, whose identical twin brother Perry also plays for the Buckeyes. "I think, I can play good defense as well, and can handle the puck pretty well, too. You can score goals, but it doesn't do any good and hurts the team if you score one goal and the other team scores two." The 6-0, 180 pound center has other strong suits as well, including his maturity and intelligence. Because of his maturity, he's been selected as a alternate cap- tain for the Buckeyes, a rare feat for a sophomore. And in the classroom Pooley maintaines a 3.8 grade point -average. "He's a mature hockey player, and that is what helps him to play so well," said Buckeye Coach Jerry Welsh. "And he's a leader out there, even though he's only a sophomore. He's a lot older than your normal kid of that age." . In the academic area, Pooley said he takes his education very seriously. An OSU Scholar -Athlete, Pooley is majoring in accounting and is thinking about getting a double major in marketing. "Getting a good education and my degree is very important to me," he said. "You never know what may happen on the ice you may have a freak accident and break your leg or something - so you have to have something to fall back on. And as strange as it may sound. I study a lot, too." Last year Pooley said he didn't know what to ex- pect. having played in the Canadian junior hockey leagues before venturing to Columbus. He said he knew college hockey was fast -paced, but he wasn't quite sure how fast. "I didn't know what 1 could do and didn't have that much confidence in myself at first," he said. "But things just happened to work out well. I was surprised I scored so many points." Pooley said this year's slow start can be attributed to last year's prize performance. He believes he put too much pressure on himself to repeat last year's ef- fort Last year I didn't play that well early in the season. so I put pressure on myself to get off to a better start." he said. "But I think I'm getting back into my game now. Both Perry and I were a bit frustrated hecause of our starts, but Coach Welsh talk- ed to us and told us to quit worrying about it and to play our games. It seems to be working." The main thing is winning," he said. "It's a lot rougher league this year. sothere'sgoing to be a lot more closer games. I think we just have to get it together and not get down if we lose a few games." I look for Paul to continue to be a consistent and r ',mpetittve hockey player," said Welsh. "Whether it's face-off in practice or one in a game, he's always nmpetitive. He's done an outstanding job for us." With over two years of collegiate hockey left for Pooley. it's a good bet that even brighter days are .1wiiting his future. Still Scoring ,\ few weeks ago we talked about the possibility of ti'<,vne Gretzky reaching the 200 mark in points in the atitmaI Hockey League this year. The great number 99 of the Edmonton Oilers is heading for that mark. After 32 games, Gretzky has 33 goals and 46 assists for a total of 79 points. At that rate he would end the 80 game schedule with 197.5 points. If Gretzky would get two and a half points for the balance of the season he would end up with 199 points. 1 Good team efforts to beat Mitchell, Lambeth Waxers advance to Silver Stick regional final The Exeter Waxers scored two impressive victories in Silver Stick novice tour- nament play in Parkhill on the weekend to advance to the regional championship.
