HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1981-12-09, Page 23Hensall church groups mark Christmas season The ('hristms meeting of Unit IV was held in the Fellowship Hall of the Hen- sall United Church December 3 at 2:30 p.m. with sixteen members and one visitor present. Mrs. Nan Britton presided for the meeting and opened with a Christmas poem followed with the singing of the carol "While Shepherds watched their flocks by Night". Mrs. Hazel Luther was in charge of the devotional reading a poem dealing with the real meaning of Christ- mas. She then read several passages from the second chapter of Matthew and closed with prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted and the roll call was taken. Mrs. Dorothy Mickle was secretary for the meeting and Mrs. Susan Purdy was hostess. The collection was taken and dedicated. Mrs. Myrtle Sherritt, treasurer. gave a splendid report of the group for the year Mrs. Mary Roobol, card convener, reported the cards sent out for the past month. The group was reminded about the general meeting Monday evening December 7 at ft p.m. to be held in .the auditorium of the church. The carol "0 Little Town of Bethlehem was sung. Mrs. Shirley Luther gave a lovely Christmas message entitled "Unending Pilgrimage". She spoke of the Shepherds going to Bethlehem where Jesus was born and the wonderful work of Jesus while He was on earth'. Jesus being the "Saviour of the World". She closed her message with prayer. Mrs Hilda Payne a guest at the meeting spoke for the communications committee of the church about "The United Church Observer" and hoping eventually every member would take this great magazine. In closing Mrs. Britton read a poem and between each verse a carol was sung. For the prayer the group sang the chorus of the carol -0 come Let JJs Adore Him, Christ the Lord." Before the lunch was serv- ed Mrs. Florence Slade read a letter from Dr. Knight thanking the Sunday School children for the money they sent to help buy garden seeds for the people of Africa. During the social hour a cup of tea and Christ- mas cookies were served. Bishop visited Irene Kalbfleisch. Mr. and Mrs. William Westlake and Mr. Wallace Makins visited Miss Mary Westlake. Mabel Stanlake and Ilia Love of Ex- eter visited Mrs. Leah Keyes. Doug and Eva Triebner and Tom and Noella Triebner visited their mother Mrs. Triebner. Steve and Minke Soepboer visited Alice Hozendall - her husband Don also visited with her. The ladies of Mt. Carmel CWL will present their play December 13, at 7:30 at the Mt. Carmel school aym. Second Sunday in Advent The service for the second Sunday in Advent was con- ducted by Rev. Stanley McDonald at Hensall United Church on December 6. The second Advent candle was lit by Glenn Slade representing the young peo- ple of the church congrega- tion and reminding the con- gregation that a gift is at the heart of Chirstmas The service opened with a carol sing and the senior choir sang the "Nativity Tale" by Belyen with Mrs. Donna St. .John taking the solo part. The children were shown a collection of Christ- mas symbols. bells. a star, and other things and then reminded that it is not these things that make Christmas but the birth of Jesus Christ. The sermon was entitled "Shalom. my friends, Shalom". Shalom signifies something even greater than the joy of Christmas • it in- cludes the joy and the peace and the highest fulfillment of Christmas. May all the peo- ple experience Shalom at Christmas. The Sacrament of Holy Communion was ad- ministered following the ser- mon. Welcoming worshippers was Rick McGee and ushers were David and John Rowcliffe Edison Forrest and Ken McLean. The United Church women met following the service for their annual meeting. Visitors at Queensway Manor Visiting with Mrs. Wilds were Henry and Marie Wilds. Dianne Wilds and friends Amanda and Irma Wilds. Ken Dogan. Mrs. Taylor. Vera Pincombe, Thelma Russell visited Louise Mitchell, also her grandsons Jim and Barry Denroche. Iva Ridley and Ilia Dunn visited Vera Lam- mie. Joan Betteridge and Violet Kippen Ry MRS. RENA CALDWELL Kippen East W.I. will hold their Christmas party in Hensall United Church, December 18 with dinner at 8:30 p.m. Stan Paquette will be the speaker. . Emerson Kyle returned from Victoria Hospital, Friday. The Cooper families held their Christmas December 8. Kippen U.C.W. catered to the event. CWL PRESENTS PLAY — Ladies of the Mt. Mrs. Mary liar !met spent the weekend with her sister .Mrs. Helen Thomp- son. Bethel Reformed Ladies entertained the residents with Christmas Carols and bingo last week. Rev. Miner conducted the Church ser- vice on Tuesday. Christmas party The United Church Sunday School held their annual Christmas party. on Friday evening. with an excellent attendance. The evening opened with carol singing followed by a tilm "The Night The Animals Talked" with a dis- cussion with the children. Games period divided the group into three smaller groups with Pam Scotchmer and Beth McGee leading the Kindgarten section. Janis Bisback and Mary .Inn Topp leading the Junior section and Heather Forest, Sharon Wurm and Pat Cook leading the senior section. Following a very enjoyable games period all students returned to the Fellowship Hall were Santa arrived, with treats for all the children. The Junior Choir of the United Church enjoyed a piz- za party as guests of Rev. McDonald, at the Manse on Thursday afternoon follow- ing their practice. The Junior Choir will lead in the ministry of music at the January third service and will assist the Senior Choir at the Christmas Family service on Sunday, December 27. Complete business for closing The Chiselhurst congrega- tion met on Monday evening in Hensall Church and com- pleted their business on the disbursments of funds prior to their official closing and amalgamation with the Hen- sall United Church. They also decided to hold a con- gregational pot luck supper and fellowship evening in the Hensall church on Tuesday. December 29 at 6:45 p.m. at which time they will also hear the annual reports. Bride -elect honoured An enjoyable evening was spent at the Hensall Legion Hall when a number of neighbours and friends assembled in honour of Miss Darlene Uvl bride -elect of this week. Miss Julia... McClinchey conducted conteSts and read the address to the bride. Misses Deanie McClinchey and Vennesa Stewart presented the gifts. Miss tiy1 made a fitting rep- ly thanking everyone of the beautiful gifts. The shower was arranged by Mrs. Clarence Reid. Amber Lodge to hold Christ- mas party Noble Grand Bertha MacGregor presided for the meeting of Amber Rebekah Lodge on Wednesday even- ing assisted by the Vice Grand Gladys Coleman who gave the report of the visiting committee. Mrs. Elizabeth Riley reported for the C.P.T. com- mittee stating arrangements were made for the shut-ins treats at Christmas. Outside there was just enough snow to take one of the machines for a test ride. Hully Gully's Randy Collins said he felt there had been a lack of this type of show for snowmobile enthusiasts. He said they had tried to offer general information on the many aspects of the sport. In attendance were representatives of the On- tario federation of snow- mobile clubs and the Lake Huron Regional Snowmobile Association. Entry to the show was free and Collins said about 1.500 people attended over the course of the weekend. Collins was pleased with the turn out and hopes to run a similar show next year.
