Lose by a point
Girls out of WOSSA
A poor first half proved to
be the downfall of the South
Huron senior girls'
basketball team as they
were edged, 31-30 by Sarnia
Central Centaurs in the first
round of the WOSSA
championships, Friday night
in Strathroy.
The Panthers rallied back
in the fourth quarter, out-
scoring Sarnia 15-9, after
being down 20-10 at the half.
Lori Brand, who led South
Huron with 10 points and 6
rebounds, scored with less
than 10 seconds left to pull

South Huron to within one
point of the Centaurs.
However, South Huron's
press proved fruitless in its'
attempt to force a Sarnia
turnover in the dying
seconds.
"We were a little rusty
after the two week layoff.
The kids wanted to play a
little harder in the second
half and it showed," coach
Terry O'Rourke said, after
the game.
The girls were unable to
finish up plays and make the
close, yet essential, shots.
Several times South Huron
failed to make good on the
multiple rebounds. Central
gave them under the basket.
Maja Gans and Deb
Taylor had 9 and 7 points,
respectively. Leslie Hunter-
Duvar came off the bench In
the fourth period to add 6
points. Cindy Down pulled
down 8 rebounds for the
Panthers.
Close to 30 loyal and
exuberant fans travelled to
Strathroy to see the girls
play.
Although it ended on a
losing note, this year's
season, which climaxed in a
Huron -Perth championship,
represents the best effort by
a senior girl's basketball
team in some 16 years. As
O'Rourke put it, "All in all, it
was a satisfying season."

The Thedford Curling Club
has been meeting on Wed-

members taking part. Many
long-time members have
commented on the quality of
the ice year, saying that it is
the best they have seen in the
new arena.
The rink of Ron G.

The South Huron senior
boy's basketball team
showed that they have some
work to do if they hope to
contend for the Huron -Perth
title. The team had two
losses against conference
teams this weekend at a
tournament in Stratford.
"We're not really ready
yet. We have a lot of work to
do both offensively and
defensively," O'Rourke said
Monday.
The Panthers were
defeated 63-25 by Stratford
Central in the first round and
then dropped a closer 45-32
count to Goderich. South
Huron pulled to within three
points in the third quarter,
but a fourth quarter surge by
the Vikings put the game out
of reach.
John McAllister had nine
points against Stratford.
John Mol and Kevin Parsons
each had six points. John
Mol scored 10 points against
Goderich. Kevin Parsons
and John McAllister each
had 7 points.
The team hosts Strathroy
in an exhibition contest
tomorrow, Thursday and
will travel to Petrolia for a
tournament this weekend.
