To honour Derry Boyle, Friday

Who got the best of the deal?
That is the question asked in variably after
every time sporting teams trade players.
The Detroit Tigers recently swapped their
highest salaried performer Steve Kemp to the
Chicago White Sox for Chet Lemon, another top -
notch outfielder.
Rumours had it that the Tigers wanted to get
rid of Kemp not only because of his request for at
least one million dollars a year. but because of the
fact he has only one year left before attaining free
agency.
We heard Detroit manager Sparky Anderson
on a radio show Monday night and he said free
agency had nothing to do with the trade. His state-
ment makes sense as he gets Lemon who is also
eligible to sell himself by way of free agency for
the 1983 season.
Anderson said the trade was made strictlyon
baseball ability and indicated he was one of the
driving forces in securing Lemon.
The Tiger manager said the acquisition of
Lemon. who bats right handed as opposed to Kemp
from the left side will mean the Tigers should face
fewer left handed pitchers during the 1982 season.
With Lemon on the Tiger roster they now have
six black players and that's the most they have ever
had on a 25 man roster in a black -majority city.
Statistics have shown the Tigers throughout their
history have the whitest team in baseball.
General manager Jim Campbell said race had
nothing to do with the Kemp -Lemon deal. The only
race that really counts we suppose is the pennant
race and the White Sox would appear to have a
better shot than Detroit.
The new owners of the Chicago White Sox
have been spending money like it was going out of
style contrary to Detroit.
They put together $20 million dollars to
purchase the team with the announced intention of
buying up talented players, paying them the going
rate and then market their product to Chicago fans
through extensive pay television.
They expect to show 112 games next year and
have signed Don Drysdale and Ken Harrelson to
multi-year six figures contract to do the play by
play.
In comparison the Tigers have a much lower
key pay television setup. Last year they showed
only 20 games.
A year ago the White Sox brought veteran star
performers Ron Leflore, Greg Luzinski and Carlton
Fisk to Coniskey Park. Now they have Kemp and
are making serious overtures to Reggie Jackson.
The Chicago brass are not just sticking to
players when it comes to high contracts. They have
hired two top notch coaches intim Leyland, a very
experienced manager from the Detroit organization
and the legendary batting coach Charlie Lau. Lau's
salary is about $90,000 a year. When Sparky Ander-
son started at Detroit in 1979 his salary was $110.-
000.
Good reading
If you have a hockey fan on your Christmas
shopping list that would enjoya good book. we have
a suggestion.
On a recent radio commentary, Stephen Lewis
talked about a new publication called The Game
Of Our Lives. He said it was the best hockey book
he had read in a long time.
We have only scanned the book very quickly
and it appears that Lewis knew what he was talking
about. While the book features mainly the
successes of Wayne Gretzky and Edmonton Oilers,
it covers hockey past and present with an easy
presentation.
The Game Of Our Lives is written by Peter
Growski. a former CBC radio and television host
and editor of Maclean's magazine. He spent the
1980-81 season travelling with the Oilers around
the NHL circuit.
Growski's book ranges from the small town kids
who reach stardom to the incredible performance
of the Oilers and also about hockey's past including
stars such as Howie Morenz. the Richards. Bobby
Hull and Gordie Howe.
