E. SUMMERS GRANTON Unit 1 of Granton U.C.W. met at the home of Mrs.John Forrest on December 2 for their Christmas meeting. Mrs. G. McRobert presided and opened with lesson thoughts on "Holiday Hostessing" Everyone contributed to the program with readings. stories. music and singing. Mrs. G. McRobert told the story of the First Creche. Participating were Mrs. G. Westman, Miss M. McNaughton. Mrs. R. Har- die. Mrs. E. Morden, Mrs. E. Sumners. Miss E. Wallis and Mrs. C. McRobert. Mrs. R. Harloff C.G.I.T. leader mentioned the Vesper service the girls were put- ting on at the church December 20 and also shared a Christmas custom which she and her family observed. Unit 4 held their Christ- mas meeting at the church. Mrs. C. Hardie and Mrs. N. Tate were hostesses. Mrs. C. Hardie presided and opened the meeting with two readings. During the business period. plans were discussed for the general meeting for which this unit is responsible for the program. Following a practice for the program. Santa Claus came and everyone found out who their "Mystery Pal" was. A minutes silence was observed and Mr. Morden offered a prayer in memory of Mrs. Alex (Lizziei Crockett. a former member of unit 4. Mrs. Florence Bryan was the hostess for Unit 5. Mrs. ('has IsleRobert presided and opened the meeting with a reading. The theme of the Devotional was Christmas. Lesson thoughts were on "The 'l'en Commandments of ('hristmas. Six members answered the roll call The Rev. E. Morden and Mrs. Morden were present. :\l1 members took part in the program with stories. poems and ('hristmas hymns. Everyone contributed to the lunch. followed by a gift exchange. C.G.I.T. news The members of Granton (' G LT and their leaders enjoyed a night out as their ('hristmas treat on November 24. This included a chinese dinner at the Jade Palace in London. followed by their attendance at the Grand Theatre to see the play The Bells are Ringing". The girls are very busy rehearsing for their Vesper service at the United Church on December 20 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to at- tend. Come and enjoy this MR. AND MRS. DANNY SMITH Nancy Jane Cooper and Danny Lawrence Smith were united In marriage at Elimville United Church on December 4 with Rev Stanley C. McDonald officiating. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cooper, Elimville and the groom is the son of Larry Smith and Mrs. Barb Mammett. The maid of honour was Wendy Smith and bridesmaids were Kathy Bray, Joan Cooper and Patty Smith. The best man was Paul Hockey and guests were ushered by Robert Bray, Douglas Cooper and Jason Mammett. Elwood Morden was in charge of the morning worship for the second Sun day in Advent at the United ('hurch. Entitling his sermon ('hristmas comes unex- pectedly" the minister said -It makes it very difficult for us to realize that Christ- mas is so near at hand, any day can be Christmas, referring to the song in the musical comedy "Mame" I need a little Christmas right now". No man can be sure of the day or the hour of God's coming. When Jesus was born., the Wisernen saw a star and an Angel appeared to the shepherds. this unex- pected happening changed their lives. God breaks through udex- pectedly and changes our lives. also when we reach out to someone in need we are likely to feel that God is with us. Jesus Christ quietly emerged from a humble beginning, Christmas can come to us unexpectedly when we receive Him as our Savior and as our King. Prepare ye the wayof the Lord. The ceremony of lighting the second candle in the ad- vent wreath was performed by Becky Bryan in memory of Mary and Joseph, this was followed by the Rev. Morden reading the Magnificat. In the children's story the minister explained the sym- bol of the candle as representing Jesus as the "Light of the World, and saying that Martin Luther was the first one to put candles on a Christmas tree. Two baskets of flowers were placed in the church from the funeral of John Campbell of Sparta, in lov- ing memory by his family. At St. Thomas Anglican ('hurch the Rt. Rev. A.F. Appleyard was in charge of the service assisted by the Rector. the Rev. Greg Smith, and the Celebrant of the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. John Iter)ert was the Rt. Rev. Appleyard's Chaplain and assisted throughout the service. The Old Testament Lesson was read by Susan Noon and the Epistle by Steven Ready. The Rector read the Gospel. The candidates for confir- mation were the following members: Steven Lawrence Ready Granton, Maureen Elizabeth Blackler Kirkton. Sharon Louise Daupe Kirkton. Forrester news The sisters of Court Valen- tine met at the home of their president Jean McComb on December 3 for their Christ- mas meeting and party.
