SeIf-taught painter finds niche in art
A former Exeter resident,
Judy Gratton. has been mak-
ing a name for herself
through her self-taught skills
as a painter. Now living in
Lutz. Florida. she is the
daughter of Gordon and Don-
na Price. The following
story recently appeared in a
Florida newspaper.
Three years ago Judy
Gratton decided she'd like to
try painting in oil colours.
Gratton had no knowledge
of oils. canvasses or techni-
que.
She had never studied art
and she had never touched
brush to canvas.
But she purchased a
starter oil painting kit and
canvasses and the owner of
the art supply store, where
she purchased the supplies,
gave her some basic
pointers.
Gratton's first oil painting
was a landscape. "it was a
sunset with trees," she
recalled.
"It was OK at the time. I
was pleased with it as a first
effort. but I can see the
• flaws."
In the past three years
Gratton has completed 40 oil
paintings. exhibited at
several art shows and sold

Four months ago. Gratton
became intrigued with
scratchboard. a 19th century
medium that few local ar-
tists attempt.
"A lot of people can't han-
dle it (scratchboard),"
Gratton explained. "You
have to remember ahead of
time about shadows and
reflections. It's thinking in
reverse. When working with
black scratchboard (card-
board covered with white
clay and black ink t the areas
you scratch with a scratch
knife come up white.
"In the case of white
scratchboard. areas that are
scratched come up black. To
achieve highlights you
scratch more. To achieve
darker areas. you scratch
less.
"Little mistakes such as
scratching too much can be
covered with ink. but they're
obvious to a critical eye. The
trick is: don't make a mis-
take."
Color is, added to either
white or black scratchboard
and water colours.
As she pointed to several
examples of her
scratchboard in the living
room of her mobile home,
Gratton explained. "I liked
the effect of scratchboard
so well I thought I'd try it.
