tend almost the whole depth
of the basins. '1'wo sets of
four basins connected in
series allow one set at a time
to be emptied periodically
for cleaning.
To remove the ac-
cumulated floc. the water is
sent into 12 three -element
filters. each containing 18 in-
ches of anthracite. on top of
12 inches of sand and 16 in-
ches of variable -density
gravel. All the filters
operate on a 60 -hour cycle,
after which they must be

back -washed to cleanse
themselves of the floc. After
this filtration the water is
sent through the clear well
and down to the high lift sta-
tion where it is pumped out
on its way to the Arva reser-
voir
Chlorine is also added to
kill any lingering bacteria.
Samples of water are taken
daily for chlorine content
and turbidity. These same
samples are checked in Lon-
don twice a week.
Conditions in the weather
can indirectly affect the
work of the plant, acIprding
to operator Harry HaWalton.
If. for example, the lake is
violent due to high winds,
the waves' action can dis-
turb the bottom and send
quantities of dirt and sedi-
ment into suspension, re-
quiring more frequent
backwashing of the filters.
This problem is precluded by
ice coverage in the winter.
The high lift station has
four main electric pumps
rated 2.500 horsepower each
to supply the reservoir at Ar-
va. Two service pumps do
the work for the plant's
water needs itself plus
Grand Bend and Pinery
Park. In case of power
failure. a diesel generator
will light the plant and send
water to Grand Bend.
The capital cost of the en-
tire system will be paid in
about 30 years. The plant
employs a service. and
maintenance crew of 20 peo-
ple. The attendant garage

Reeves compete for job
By STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
Two reeves will vie for the
position of warden at Huron
County's inaugural meeting
on December 8.
Reeve Harold Robinson of
Howick Township and Reeve
Grant Stirling of Goderich
Township are standing for
election.
Reeve Robinson. who is
making his second attempt
for the Warden's chair (he
was defeated in a 16-15 vote
by present Warden Fred
Haberer of Zurich), has
served the county since June
of 1965. He started -in
municipal politics as a coun-
cillor in January of 1965, and
became a deputy reeve in
June because the reeve
i
houses five vehicles for the
routine service inspections
some of the men make.
There are preliminary
plans to increase the filtra-
tion capacity by construc-
ting an addition to the plant
sometime in the next five
years, according to
superintendant Bill Sturde-
vant. Demand for water in-
creases by about six percent
annually.

vacated his seat. Howick no
longer has a deputy reeve
sitting on county council.
He was out of office from
1973 to 1976. at which time he
served on the land division
committee. During his time.,
on county council he has
served on 'property, social
services, warden's per-
sonnel'. Huronview,
development. executive and
roads committees. He has
been chairman of property,
Huronview and social ser-
vices committees.
Reeve Robinson said the
biggest challenge in 1982 will
be to fight inflation. Wages,
are a particular concern of
Reeve Robinson's.
Reeve Stirling first sat on
county council as Goderich
Township's deputy reeve in
1961. In 1964 to 1968 he was
reeve. and then he left coun-
ty council for six years. He
was first elected to township
council in the fall of 1954.
As a county councillor he
has -served on the
agricultural, roads, Huron -
view, executive, social ser-
vices and health com-
mittees. He has been chair-
man of the roads and social
services committees.
Reeve Stirling agrees with
Reeve Robinson's concern
for inflation. stating, "we
must practice as much
restraint as we can." While
he is aware county council is
limited as to what it can do
to fight inflation, Reeve
Stirling. said it should do
what it could.
The election and inaugura-
tion of Huron's 1982 warden
will take place at Huron
County Courthouse on
December 8 at 2 p.m.
