Times -Advocate, November 18, 1981
When sports teams do not fare too well, there are
only two things that owners and management can do.
The 1981-82 National Hockey League season is only
a month or so old, but, a couple of teams are pushing
the panic button and making changes.
Only one so far has gone to the route of firing the
coach. That's the Washington Capitals that had the
youngest coach in NHL history in Gary Green. The
former Peterborough Petes coach is now the youngest
coach ever to be dismissed and the Caps went to their
farm team at Hershey to bring up coach Brian
Murray.
Washington players will likely find a tremendous
change in coaching tactics as Murray describes
himself as a disciplinarian and demanding. Like Green
his coaching background before Hershey was limited
to high school college and junior ranks with the Regina
Pats of the Western junior league.
At least three trades have taken place in the NHL
this week and there are rumours of more impending.
In most trades each team is trying to dicker to get
the best of the deal, but, we doubt if that was the
motive when Harold Ballard finally got rid of Ian
Turnbull.
Ballard was likely happy to get anything at all in
return for Turnbull who had lost favour with not only
Leaf management, but, the fans as well.
When we were in Toronto more than a month ago
and talking to Ballard the question came up, "Why
don't you trade Turnbull, and Pat Hal quickly replied,
"Nobody wants him."
• Taking a deeper look at the trade, it might turn out
to be good for both clubs. Turnbull certainly has the
ability and in new surroundings might blossom back to
what he was a couple of years ago and should be good
for another four or five years m the NHL.
On the Leafs side of the ledger they get a strong
penalty killer in Billy Harris and a big, tough
youngster in John Gibson.
For Harris it should be a welcome homecoming.
Almost 10 years ago Harris played with the Toronto
Marlboros on one of the greatest forward lines in
junior hockey history with Steve Shutt and Dave
Gardner.
Harris was the number one pick overall in the
1971-72 draft and he became the first New York
Islander when selected by general manager Bill
Torrey.
Leaf coach Mike Nykoluk is pleased to have Harris
saying, "There was too much of a burden put on him as
the top pick and everybody expected him to be a super
star. I don't think he will ever be a super star, but, he's
a talented hockey player who does a lot of things and
does them well."
Billy Harris should be very valuable to the Leafs in
killing penalties and in any situation when they want
a particular player shadowed and checked.
The other player from the Kings in the deal John
Gibson will likely be sent off to the farm in Cincinatti
for development and could fit into long range Leaf
plans.
Getting back to Turnbull his career appeared to go
downhill when Roger Neilson was let go as coach and
over the past three seasons his play could be described
as indifferent to say the least.
The highlight of Turnbull's stay with the Leafs
would be in February of 1977 when he scored five goals
in a game against the Detroit Red Wings.
With Harris joining the Toronto lineup, the club
now has 11 first round draft selections on the roster.
The other top draft choices are Darryl Sittler, Wilf
Paiement, Dan Maloney, Laurie Boschman, Bill
Derlago, John Anderson, Paul Marshall, Bob Manno,
Jim Benning and Gary Yaremchuk.
That sounds like a lot of talent and should add up to
more than only 11 points in the first 16 games of the
new season. A quick look at the goals against record
and one can see why the Leafs are in last place in the
Norris division.
The Toronto club has allowed 78 goals, which is
almost five goals a game. The only clubs with poorer
records in that department are Los Angeles, Calgary
and Quebec.
In the other recent trades, the Detroit Red Wings
appear to have the best of the deal when they picked up
Eric Vail from Calgary for Gary McAdam and a cou-
ple of fourth round draft choices.
The Flames are getting desperate. They have also
sent captain Brad Marsh to Philadelphia for a tough
centre Mel Bridgman.
The Red Wings off to a good start in the early go-:
ing have fallen off a bit and can be expected to do some:
more trading. The latest rumour we heard on a Detroit
radio station Thursday night is that Mark Howe may'
be included in the latest trade talks.
Open up the money sacks
The latest baseball free agent draft is now over
and some clubs will be having lots of financial talks
with the players they chose in Friday's selections.
Not as many clubs took part in the draft as have in
the past. This probably shows they don't have the
necessary dollars to throw around.

Remain two games back
Hawks win three times, fail
Winning three out of four
games in one week should be
enough to enable a team to
hold or even better its league
position. But it wasn't for
the Exeter Hawks.
The Hawks dropped a 3-2
decision to the Tavistock
Braves at the rec centre,
Sunday, and fell two full
games behind the Braves in
the northern division. It was
the third loss of the season
for the Hawks, while
Tavistock have lost just
once, that being an earlier
meeting in Exeter.
Mitchell stayed right
behind the locals in third
place, having lost the same
number of games, but also
having a tie in their record.
In the first meeting of the
season, Exeter posted a 9-0
win over Tavistock, but they

this week in the Ontario

The Irish were held to a 5-5
tie by the Mount Brydgess,

the Lucan arena and Friday
night they dropped a close 4-

goal. The game was only 15

The Hawks had trouble

drives at the rec centre, Sun-

close decision to the Braves.
The winning marker came
early in the second period on
a play that netminder Rich
Fletcher thought he had
smothered. However, the
puck came loose and was
quickly banged into the cage
before Fletcher could
recover.
Kerry Bedard and Brian

Nip Irish
Playing at home, Friday,
in their senior citizen night

Irish.
Exeter spotted their
guests an early 1-0 lead and
then roared back to take
command with four straight
goals of their own.

Lucan came in the last four
minutes of the game as the
Hawks came dangerously
close to coasting too far with
their margin.

Hawks, the latter two on un-
assisted efforts. Larry Dow -
son and Brooks picked up
assists on the other tallies.

seconds in the middle frame
and the winner in the third
came on a powerplay.
Brian Mercer and Bill
Glover notched two goals
each to lead the victory with
singles going to Dave Atthill
and Steve Prout. John Ker -
nick assisted on three and
Mercer helped out on a pair.
Adding single assists were

ing, Brian Baker and Atthill.
The game was a wide-open
affair as Belmont had 46
shots and Exeter recorded
45. The teams split in
penalties with nine minors
each.
Rally for win
In Hensall, Saturday, the
Hawks scored three times in
the final period to break a
dead lock and post a 6-3 win
over the Centenaires.
Seaforth led 2-1 after the
first and the squads were
even at three apiece after
two periods before the
Hawks got the winner at the
8:51 mark of the third and
then added two insurance
tallies.
Paul Johnson, Kerry
Bedard, Tony Underhill,
Preston Dearing and Steve
Prout scored for the Hawks
with Brian Baker leading the
