CLANDEBOYE
The November meeting of
the Clandeboye Women's
Institute was held on
Wednesday at the home of
Mrs. Wilmer Scott. Presi-
dent, Edith Worthington
opened the meeting with the
W.I. Ode, Mary Stewart
Collect and a Remembrance
Day prayer given by Mrs.
Scott.
Marion Hodgson acted as
secretary -treasurer in the
absence of Irene Lynn.
Seventeen members
answered the roll call,
"Name a protein, other than
meat".
Eleanor Kestle, convener
of Family and Consumer Af-
fairs, was in charge of the -
program, which was based
on the very important bean
industry. Mrs. Kestle gave
out folders with recipes of
beans and told of their great
food value.
Lucille Blake read, which
she had composed in verse,
"The story of beans, from
the field to the table which
reads as follows: White
Beans, Also known as navy
beans.
Beans are popular with the
farmers because they are a
cash crop.
Soybeans are becoming
more popular but white
beans are still at the top;
Growing white beans is a
tricky endeavour,
Nine percent of their turn
out, depends on the weather.
After the beans are planted
in the late spring;
Caring for them is really no
big thing;
When the plants have grown
big, from little seeds,
You ride around on your
tractor and scuffle out the
weeds;
The green plants look
wonderful in the field.
They usually give a very
good yield;
If the weather is right when
the pods are full.
They ripen to a stage and are
ready to pull;

Then comes the combining
and transporting to the mill,
Where they are tested for
pickers and moisture, the
mill rule to fill.
Eighteen percent moisture
or less is okay,
The first cheque is issued
without much delay;
The Bean Board takes over
the grower's fate
And pays him twice more, at
a later date;
Beans are popular with the
housewives, too
No trouble to cook, a lot or a
few;
Beans are loved by the
young or old,
Enjoyed by most, hot or
cold;
Beans should be soaked in
water, overnight,
To make them tender and
easy to bite;
Soaking also makes the
beans swell up,
Use twice as much water as
beans by the cup;
Bring to a boil in soda and
water, then drain,
Add fresh water and cook
again;
The soda removed the
crackers that cause the pain.
And relieves your system of
the noise and strain.
Area convention reports
