Various other crafts take up much of her spare time, too. ®,OOS S Calligraphy still thrives 1 Scribes preserve art form Calligraphy, or exquisite handwriting, IS an art form thousands of years old, and pre -dates written language. It originated in pictographs and hieroglyphics in primitive illiterate societies, and was preserved from extinction i n monasteries during the Dat k Ages. The printing -press era hurt calligraphy, but it still thrives today as beautiful embellishments of writing and script. Three local women practise the art in their own ways. Maxine Sereda, RR 1 Cen- tralia taught herself to do basic calligraphy some 15 years ago, after discovering it through Ed Tape, a skilled calligrapher who would periodically write the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm for buyers. Though he has since passed away, Mrs. Sereda still speaks respect- fully of -his talent. "I just learned it by prac- tise". she- said to explain how she acquired it. "I watch to see how other peo- ple do it, and then mimic them to suit myself." She admits her approach is not authentic calligraphic writing: she first writes out the words and then retraces them slowly to add the decoration. She uses the simplest of tools - a ballpoint and felt-tip pen. Experts such as Mr. Tape use a straight pen with removable nibs to vary the thickness of the type, she said. Mrs. Sereda has drawn large welcoming signs for the wedding anniversary of an Exeter couple. Other work includes inscriptions in personal Bibles, library books. on photos for the Curling club. as well cer- tificates for the Lionesses. "I don't keep anything that I've done - it all goes out for someone to use, she said. For Maxine, • fine handwriting is one of many crafts on which she spends her time. She knits, crochets, makes quilts and comforters, sews, and strips and refinishes antique fur- niture, one of her more favourite hobbies. She also restores old furniture can- inA limited kind of calligraphy is taught as part of the package design course of 21 -year-old Brenda Ballantyne of RR 3 Exeter. She is close to completing the three-year course at the north campus of Toronto's Humber College. "I do structural design, such as for a glass bottle. Lettering is used for making labels. It was hard to do at first. but it helped me to do more rigid lettering and different type styles," she said. In her case, the emphasis was on spacing and being able to copy accurately. "We look at the space around the object, not just the object itself on the package." she said. With what she learned, Brenda was able to do two invitations for functions at her church, as well as an il- lustration of the edifice for its centennial booklet. The invitations were done by latraset. a form of tracing. She works for Consumers Glass. on a cooperative basis arranged by the College. She works for a few months at a time for practical ex- perience in her field In Grand Bend, gift store owner Bev Harwood has just recently increased her stock of calligraphy kits after a year of having them on her shelves. She said she has already sold several of her more pricey $10 kits, which she originally bought to use herself to make store signs. She runs Harwood's Gifts on 81 Crescent, which adjoins her husband's pharmacy. The kit has a special pen with three removable nibs, 14 coloured ink cartridges, a pad and instruction book. "There might be a few ar- tisitc people in this area who will use it," she said. Mrs. Harwood's own ex- perience in finer writing goes back to her father and her own schooling, at Strat- ford Collegiate Institute, where she attended. "Prin- ting was part of my Grade 9 course there, and I really enjoyed it," she recalled. Her father. too, has been instructed in ornate writing, and he was called upon to do Christmas cards and prayer book inscriptions. In his day, it seemed. fine writing was taught in school almost as a rudiment. she said. She said she wants to learn more about it and hopes to see it offered at night school in Grand Bend.
