Commencement told 'life is keeping on'
"I think that every
moment is a fresh beginning
and that life is only keeping
on" wrote T.S. Eliot in his
play "Cocktail Party"
Principal J.L. Wooden made
reference to this quote in his
address to the graduates at
the 80th annual com-

mencement exercises at
South Huron District High
School.
Wooden told 172 grade 12
graduates and a grade 13
graduating class of 32 that
although they may have to
make many new beginnings,
they should never give up.
Huron County Board of
Education superintendent,
Bob Allan told the graduates
that the declining enrollment
of the last 10 years would be
to their advantage when they
enter the work force. "You
have every reason to 'be
optimistic because there will
be fewer people to do the
necessary jobs,"'he said.
Mary Anne Hogan and
Paul McAuley took home the
Moncur scholarships. worth
close to $4,000, for having the
highest academic averages
in grade 13. The Student
Council Scholarship was
given to Arndt Vermaeten.
For their contributions to
school life and community
involvement, Anne Marie
Brand, Doug Raymond and
Elizabeth Scott were
presented with the
Citizenship Shield and
Student Council plaques.
In her valedictory for the
grade 12 graduates, Shiela
Eisenchink suggested that
"the steps get even bigger
and more consequential
after high school. There are
bigger hurdles like
university and college, a job
or marriage."
Wayne Parsons, grade 13
put the evening in per-
spective with his remarks.
"Although our high school
days are over, forever, the
South Huron experience will
be long remembered."
Honour student dinner
Close to 80 students
received recognition for
their academic achievement
at Friday nights South Huron
District High School Honour
banquet.
In his address to the
students, principal Joe
Wooden likened the honour
students role in school life to
the function of the cavalry
in warfare. "It lends tone to
what would otherwise be a
disgusting brawl," he
quipped in his best English
accent.

the group was in Greenwich
Village in the smaller off-
broadway theatres. A mix-
ture of traditional and con-
temporary ballet, comprised
the repertoire of the Joffrey
Company. "Cloud Nine" was
one of the several plays seen
by the group. The play is an
examination of traditional
sex roles in society and how
they trap people.
The Metropolitan museum
and the Guggenheim
museum were among the
galleries visited during the
cultural emmersion. A lot of
the people on the trip ex-
plored the multi -cultural
cuisine of Greenwich Village
and the exclusive shops of
Fifth Avenue.
During their visit to the
"Big Apple". some of the
group attended a Hallowe'en
concert by new wave heroes,
Devo. at Radio City Music
Hall.
"The trip was a real
eyeopener". said Grade 13
student. Daryl Webber.
"What may seem abstract
or absurd in Exeter is nor-
mal in New York".
