HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1981-11-11, Page 13Mohawks win 9-0 In their only start this week in the South Huron in- termediate hockey league, the Exeter Mohawks scored a convincing 9-0 win over the Centralia College Saints Thursday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. The next action for the Mohawks will be tomorrow night, Thursday when they meet the Centralia Marauders at 8:30 p:m. again at the South Huron Rec Centre. In Thursday's victory the Mohawks scored five times in the first period to leave little doubt as to which club would come out on top. The game was less than three minutes old when Brad Daters completed a three- way effort with Dan Stanlake and Dave Jackson. Before the first 20 minutes had elapsed Tom Ryan fired two successful shots while single scores were added by Mike Clark and Dean Densmore. Assists went . to Densmore Ryan, Dave Underwood and captain Mike Anstett. The only goal of the second period was scored by Brad Daters on passes from Dean Densmore and Pete Gill. Scoring for the Mohawks in the closing session were Dave Jackson. Brad Daters to complete a hat trick per- formance and Mike Anstett. Luc Gagnon picked up two assists and Dean Densmore helped on one score. The Mohawks took seven of the 11 minor penalties handed out. Field hockey season ends The South Huron fieldhockey team finished a most successful season on a losing note as they had one win and two losses at the OFSAA fieldhockey tourna- ment. Friday and Saturday, in Toronto. "They had us ranked in the top eight of the 16 but we were in a very even pool and that made it tough", said coach. Jim Workman. Friday morning, in the rain and snow. South Huron played a good game but wound up on the short end of a 1-0 tally against South Carleton. "We couldn't capitalize on our scoring opportunities", said Workman. That after- noon Patti Willis played "ex- ceptional hockey" and scored in the last minutes to give South Huron a 2-1 win over George Vanier of North York. Marilyn Brand scored the other goal on a penalty corner. The team's crucial game came Saturday morning against Mississauga Mayfield. A Panther win would place them first in their pool and advance them to the semi-finals. South Huron managed a scoreless draw in the'first half but in the second half, Mayfield erupted for three quick goals. T -A photo Rec hockey league underway Play in the popular Exeter rec hockey league started October 27 with three one sided games. In the first game between the Trees and the strong Pfaff Electric squad. Pfaff dominated the game throughout and if it weren'I for the strong goaltending of Ray Labelle, the score would have been much higher than a 7-1 count. Don McKellar led Pfaff's with four goals followed by Randy Gilfillan with two and Jim Rolph picked up one. Bill Pincombe had four assists. Gerry Sararas broke the goose egg for Pete Par- sons in the Pfaff goal. The next game was between the new Dashwood Hotel versus the always strong Algoma Tire. Algoma had the chances earlier but couldn't capitalize with the Hotel taking the game 7-2. Dashwood scoring was well spread out. John Gillespie scored two goals while Larry Mason, Ken Bergmann. and Beuten- miller. Scott Burton and Paul Mason each scored one. John Hayman and Bob Parsons scored for Algoma Tire in a strong second period. Defending champ Dashwood Tigers continued right where they left off last year. soundly defeating the MacLean Sports team 9-0. Paul Maguire and Steve Kadelecik led Dashwood with two goals apiece. Bill Hoffman. Bob Lovie, Don scoreboard in the last minute. Workman has high hopes for next years squad, as the team will lose only Brenda Brand. Lisa Hamather and Cindy Janke by graduation. The potential of young players like fullbacks Ken- dra Arthur and Pauline DeVries should leave the team in good stead. Thorton, John Becker and Brian Rader finished the rout. In November 4 action, Dashwood Tigers again put forward a strong effort in defeating a shorthanded Algoma Tire squad 9-1. Jim Guenther led Dashwood with three goals followed by John Becker with two games and an assist and Perry Stover with two. Bill and Bob Hoffman finished the scoring. Al Parsons assisted by Wayne Mavkr broke Joe Ar- nold's shutout string of five periods with a goal early in the third. A see -saw battle took place between MacLean Sports and The Trees squads. MacLeans popped out in front on goals by Derek Vandergunst and Dave Robinson. Gerry Sararas then scored two goals in a row to knot the score. MacLeans again fought back after being shut out last week getting goals from Jeff Rowe and Mark Hern. The game ended 4-2 and featured strong goalten- ding from both Paul Cooper and Ray Labelle. Last years' finalists, Pfaff Electric faced the newest entry into the league Dashwood Hotel, and in a closely contested battle came out with a 3-2 win. Ron Moore opened the scoring for Dashwood on a deflection from Larry Mason. Then Pfaff fought back with two quick goals by Scott Pincombe and Ken Pinder. Beat Marauders twice Times -Advocate, November 11, 1981 Page 13 Sherwoods win two SH games The Hensall Sherwoods up- ped their scoring averages considerably this week as they scored two victories over the Centralia Marauders in South Huron hockey league play. Thursday night, the Sherwoods downed the Marauders 8-5 and the next night they went on a real scoring rampage to beat the same club 15-3. The only game scheduled for the Sherwoods this week is Thursday night when they are at home to the Zurich Buckeyes while the Marauders will be in Exeter the same night to take on the Mohawks. Ken Varley was the top performer for the Sherwoods in Thursday's win over Centralia as he scored five times, two goals coming late in the third period to clinch the win. Varley scored two first period goals with Brian Maher picking up two assists and Dave Kinsman and Terry Caldwell helping on one goal each. The other first period Hen- sall goal came from the stick of Dave Kinsman with Varley providing the pass while Rich Lather converted a pass from captain Matt Muller for the Marauders. In the second'period each team scored two goals. For the Sherwoods, Varley notched his third score of the night from Kinsman and Paul Smale while Dwight Consitt hit from Varley and Kinsman. For Centralia Rick Funston set up Perry Knee for a score and registered himself on a play started by Kinsman and Varley. In the final frame, Varley scored twice to complete his five goal effort with assists from Brian Maher and Dwight Consitt while Lloyd Allen counted on passes from Rick Agar and Rick Ingram. Rick Funston and Perry Knee were the final marksmen for the Marauders on plays started by Blair Hearn, Rick Funston. Matt Muller and Bill Hodge. The Sherwoods scored six unanswered goals in the first period on the way to their 15- 3 romp Friday night. The first period Hensall goals were shot by Dwight Consitt. Ken Varley, Terry Caldwell. Rick Agar, Rick Funsrrlan and Consitt added their second goals of the night for the Sherwoods and Brian Maher notched his first.
