'1-*` " Spotlight
Ai" By Ross Haugh
With about one-sixth of the regular schedule com-
pleted in the National hockey league a few surprises
have arisen along with a couple of disappointments.
The biggest surprise has to be in Winnipeg where
the Jets are off to a flying start and making coach Tom
Watt look pretty good.
Watt, known as one of the best authorities on
hockey basics in amateur and international hockey
ranks appears to be successful in transferring his
knowledge to the professional level.
He always had his Toronto Varsity Blues team
near the top in intercollegiate play and has been a
valuable coaching member of a number of Canadian
Olympic teams.
The Jets have already won seven games and are in
third place in the Norris division only four points
behind the leading Minnesota North Stars.
The seventh win for the Jets during the 1980-81
season didn't come until well into February.
It's also a much brighter picture in Detroit with
the Red Wings getting out of the starting gate well
with coach Wayne Maxner improving in his bid to
switch from a successful coaching career in junior
ranks to a similar spot in the big leagues.
The Red Wings have been getting outstanding goal
tending in recent games from a relative newcomer. He
is 18 year-old Carrado Micalef who took over when
regular Gilles Gilbert was injured. Gilbert now has a
hand in a cast and is not expected back for a couple of
weeks.
The way Micalef has played especially in Montreal
Saturday night when he was named the first star
despite giving up four goals, Gilbert may have some
trouble getting his job back.
The closest race is shaping up in the Wales
Conference with only two points separating the first
four teams. The Boston Bruins are currently on top,
but. the Quebec Nordiques and Montreal Canadiens
are only one point behind and the Buffalo Sabres trail
by two points.
The Nordiques are strong due mainly to the great
efforts put forth by the three Stasny brothers. Peter
Stasny is tied for fourth place in the league scoring
race.
As expected Wayne Gretzky is leading the NHL in
scoring and we do mean in scoring rather than in
assists as has been his past history.
Gretzky has adopted a 'shoot -more' philosophy
and it has paid off with 15 goals in 15 games. At the
same point last year he had seven goals and 16 assists.
At the moment the great Edmonton Oiler has 14
assists to go with the 15 goal total.
The switch in Gretzky's system is certainly to be
expected. He was well known for his unselfishness in
passing to his -team mates and now he finds himself
more often open to score on his own.
Also, Gretzky isn't living as much of his time
behind the net, a popular spot for him last year.
Although he set up a lot of goals from that position, it's
not the best spot to score from.
It certainly looks as if he is well on the way to a 50
goal mark in the same number of games.
Probably the most outstanding individual effort to
date in the early NHL season has to be that of Al
Secord.
The former Boston Bruin has found a new life with
the Chicago Black Hawks and has the Windy City fans
very excited.
Secord is on the same level as Getzky with 15 goals
in 15 games and also has an even dozen assists.
We saw a recent television game when Secord
scored four times and received a standing ovation, a
scene seldom seen in Chicago since the days of Bobby
Hull.
At this summer's Huron Hockey School, Secord
said he was happy to be in Chicago and was looking
forward to a successful season. At least, he's off to a
great start.
New GM coming
It looks as if the Toronto Maple Leafs will have a
new general manager before the current season goes
much farther.
Current GM Punch Imlach is still away following
another heart attack and Harold Ballard should soon
name a replacement.
Whoever the new man is he will be only the fifth
person to hold that position since the Toronto team
became known as the Maple Leafs in the 1926-27
season
The other Leaf general managers in addition to
Imlach has been the team's organizer Conn Smythe,
H p I)av and .Jim Gregory Smythe held the job for 30
years
Seniors to see Juniors
Senior citizens in the area will have an unusual
opportunity to see a top notch junior hockey game at a
reduced rate
All seniors attending Friday night's game at the
South Huron Rec Centre between the Exeter Hawks
and Lucan Irish will he admitted at half price.
In addition. coffee and hot chocolate will be
provided to the seniors free of charge between periods.
To draw more of the older folks. rec centre of-
ficials have agreed to turn on the heaters in the arena
during the game
Here's a good chance for seniors to watch two of
the hest teams in the western division of the Junior 'D'
league.
The Hawks are in second place in the northern
division and the Irish are only one game back in third
spot.
More good hockey
The South Huron hockey league is again providing
an excellent brand of intermediate action for area
fans.
Thursday night's schedule has an excellent pair of
games on tap. The Zurich Buckeyes will be in Hensall
to meet the Sherwoods and the Exeter Mohawks are at
home to the Centralia Marauders.
Sunday the Mohawks will be in Zurich and Monday
night the Buckeyes will take on the Centralia College
Saints at the Stephen township arena.
Despite two wins, HHawks drop back second
eter's lone goals on an un-
assisted effort when the
Hawks had a power play in
the final seconds of the first
stanza.

The Exeter Hawks had a
short fling at first place in
the northern division of the
Western Junior "I)" loop
this week, but couldn't
maintain the intensity that
got them there. and now find
they're back in second.
The locals started their
week with a third period
flurry in Bothwell to post a
7-2 win over the Barons.
Wednesday. and then carne
up with their best effort of
the season to humiliate the
unbeaten Tavistock Braves
by a 9-0 count at the rec cen-
tre. Friday.
However, the Hawks were
stopped 5-1 in Thamesford,
Sunday. with several players
still suffering from the
effects of bruises and a
sorrow -drowning party after
they lost a football game on
Saturday.
That loss dropped the
Hawks to seven wins and
two losses. Tavistock still
holds an edge with only one
loss to date, while the
Mitchell Hawks have lost
twice and been tied once in
their games to date.
The Lucan Irish are still in
the fight. having lost three
times. and it is shaping up
like a fight to the finish
among the four northern
clubs. who appear to be the
class of the entire league.
The Hawks have a tough
schedule. this week. playing
four games in five nights,
starting with tonight's con-
test in Belmont against the
defending OHA champs.
Friday night they'll host
the Irish for the second time
and it will be senior citizen
night. All seniors will be ad-
mitted for half price and
they'll receive free coffee
and hot chocolate. Rec cen-
tre management have an-
nounced they'll have the
heaters on in the stands to
keep the customers warm.
Saturday night, the Hawks
make the short trip to Hen -
sail to meet the Seaforth
Centenaires and they'll
return home on Sunday for
another encounter with the
Tavistock Braves.
Win in third
In Wednesday's game in
Bothwell. the Hawks were
held to a 2-2 draw at the end
of two periods, but they
came out flying in the third
to score five unanswered
tallies to post their triumph.
They out -shot the home
team by a 58-16 margin, but
had difficulty getting the
puck past a hot netminder.
Tony Underhill paced the
attack with two goals and
singles were recorded by
Preston Dearing, Doug
Brooks. John Kernick, Brian
Baker and Pete Tuckey.
Brooks and Brian Mercer
assisted on two each and
helping out on one were
Dave Atthill, Ed Willis,
Underhill. Dearing, Dave
Couse and Bill Glover.
Each team served 12
penalties and the Hawks
scored two of their tallies on
power plays.

with the Hawks.
Jamie Shipley's successful
shot on passes from John
Medd and Geoff Edwards at
15.24 of the third period
enabled the Irish to null out
Sunday's win.
After a scoreless first
period. the Lucan club
notched three goals in the se-
cond 20 minutes of play and
the opposition could only net
one goal.
Art Gregory started the
game scoring for the Irish at
2.49 of the middle frame on a
three-way effort with Dave
Egan and Dean Scott. Eight
minutes later. Egan upped
the score to 2-0 as he com-
pleted a combination with
Thompson and Scott.
Mark Tolmie registered
the first Port Stanley goal at
17.29 and 48 seconds later.
Gregory scored his second
goal of the night to restore
the two goal margin for
Lucan. Assisting was Doug
Latta with the Irish playing
shorthanded.
Wayne Carroll and Mark
Moore tallied for Port
Stanley to tie the score and
set the stage for Shipley's
game winning shot.
The Fish took four of the

Penalties hurt
In Wednesday's game
Mithcell took advantage of
their power play advantages
and scored four times while
the Irish were short handed.
Mitchell led 2-1 at the end
of the first period on goals
by Darrell Dietz and Morris
Biernes while Dave Egan
replied for the Irish on a
pass from Ron Glenn.
The Irish battled back ear-
ly in the middle frame and
went ahead :3-2 on successful
shots by Ken McManus and
Dean Scott. Gaining assists
were Randy Turner, Dave
Egan and Ron Glenn.
Before the middle of the
period had been reached,
Willi Smith and Rob Stovel
replied for Mitchell to go
ahead by one. but, before the
period ended Ron Glenn
scored on a power play for
the Irish on an unassisted ef-
fort.
In the first half of the third
period. John Sykes and Willi
Smith counted for Mitchell
on power play attempts to
put their club in front by 6-4.
With less than a minute to
go. Ron Glenn scored for
Lucan on a short handed ef-
fort with assists going to
Jamie Shipley and captain
Paul Wraith.
Each team was assessed
11 minor penalties by
referee Bill Walsh.
