Now in its second year of operation, this infor- mation - support group has received a grant from the Secretary of State to provide such forums for women in Huron County. This year. the series focuses on health and con- sists of four workshops. On November 18. at 7:30 p.m., at Robertson Memorial Public School in Goderich, ••It's Just Your Nerve" will take a look at the ways we use alcohol and tranquilizers to cope with the (often un- recognized) stresses of life. Most women at one time or another have heard it: "Don't worry, it's just your nerves. Take these pills... or have a drink... you'll feel better". Attempts to deal with the problems or just to make sense from their ex- periences are frequently met with this response from friends. family and doctors, as if "nerves" were trivial and pills and drink are good solutions. On December 3, at 7:30 p.m.. at Seaforth Public School. "Food. Mind and Mood" will examine how the food we eat (or don't eat) affects brain functioning and behaviour. "Coping with Stress" is the title of the third workshop. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Clin- ton Town Hall on January 12. It will highlight how we can identify stress and manage it by setting goals, working on our self-esteem and lear- ning relaxation techniques. The final workshop begins at 9:00 a.m. on February 6. at the Vanastra Community Centre. "So Who's Crazy?" will deal generally with mental health and par- ticularly with depression. Babysitting will be provided at this workshop only and lunch will be included in the price of admission ($7.00), payable at the door. The evening workshops will cost $2.00 each. Limited financial assistance is available for anyone who cannot afford this. To register or get more detail. call 235-1774 or 523-9335. Finding my way around a strange city often causes me problems. I've learned to plot my course, if at all possible, before I leave. This has proved successful several times. Then along comes a help- ful soul with the remark, "Oh, I know that city like the back of my hand." He or she then proceeds to give me the most direct route to my destination. The words, "It's a cinch" or "You can't miss it" are a dead giveaway that I'm headed for confusion. The other directional aid I've learned to avoid, thanks to some friendly advice, Is the short cut. How will I ever learn to bake if cooks keep giving me instructions like: "Oh, you don't need a measuring cup. Throw in a cup or so of flour, add a pinch of salt, pour in a little milk, stir until it feels right"? too dry, but don't water it too much. It shouldn't get too much light, but it needs some light." If I was a betting person, I'd give the hardy plant Odds 'n ends i4, Sometimes I ask the dumb question: "How should it feel when it's right?" The baker replies, "Oh, you'll just know." The person with a green thumb advises me to buy a certain hardy plant. "Not even you could kill it," she says. "Just don't let It get By Elaine Townshend tri.i .5x about two weeks to live. Speaking of betting, I've become wary of the horse expert who assures me: "This baby can't lose!" Somewhere I read that you should talk to your mechanic the way you talk to your doc- tor. Describe the characteristics of your car's problems in terms similar to those you would use to dis- cuss the symptoms of a human illness - coughing, wheezing, stiffness, slowness to react. You can try it 11 you want, but I guarantee your friendly neighbourhood mechanic will stare at you as though you've really flipped. Not only have I been the recipient of some bad advice but I've also handed out some tips that were less than the best. For example, I headed one poor lost lady to a lake rather than toward the town she was looking for. I do hope she stopped in time. I also sent a friend to.a movie that I thought sounded like a real winner. It was a loser. But, in the true spirit of friendship, she let me find out for myself that my ad- vice was wrong.
