Miscellaneous
Rumblings
By ROB CHESTER
With Hallowe'en (full
moon. strange happenings,
et alt there have been a
number of bizarre
happenings, none of which
relate to Hallowe'en, but
which seem to exemplify the
insanity of the times.
Turning to the dictionary
for a definition of news, we
find news is not reports of
things strange or unusual,
nor is it reports of
happenings or events which
have occured, but rather,
News is: (according to
Merriam Webster) material
reported in a newspaper.
That's putting the cart
before the -horse isn't it,
Merriam?
Now to the strange events:
A 13 year old boy was out
trick -or -treating, dressed in
army fatigues and carrying
a toy machine gun.
A man answering his door,
said, "So you think that's
funny?" pulled out a
revolver and shot the boy
dead.
It was reported a
prankster in St. Catherines
accidently hung himself
Meanwhile on the Russian
east coast, the Russians
themselves are seizing, and
not returning, Japanese
fishing vessals and
fishermen who intrude on
disputed territorial limits.
Advice: I hope to see the
Swedes add a new sub to
their navy.
The American govern-
ment. it was revealed this
week. granted immunity to
Japanese war criminals
who. in the name of science,
had tortured -to -death
countless prisioners of war
during World War Two.
American soldiers were
believed to have been
amongst those tortured.
The amnesty was granted
in return for disclosing the
information gained through
the grisly tests.
Two beluga whales releas-
ed by Greenpeace workers
from a US navy test base
shunned their freedom and
returned to the navy.
(Leading one to question if
the whales are really as
smart as we once believed.)
In another run-in with the
US Navy. Greenpeace in-
flatible boats were speared
by Vancouver harbour
police. while buzzing a navy
aircraft carrier visiting
Canada's west coast. One
boat. sank and had to be
rescued by police, another
limped away severely
wounded.
On the home front, Canada
Post has printed stamps
with a letter, instead of a
price indicated. The letter A
will stand for the new rate
(however outrageous that
may be).
Canada Post also sent out
a long teletype P -R release
to newspapers in Ontario.
The expensive message told
editors how the new crown
corporation was going to
become financially responsi-
ble in the future.
From April first
(Canadians played -for -a -fool
day) 1980 to June 30, 1981,
the Canadian government
spent $674,972 to supply
briefcases to its employees.
And as grande finale, the
feds also spent $8.87 each for
1250 games to be used tol
teach civil servants a second
language.
The name of the game?
Lunacy, you say? No "La
grande finale". (Which in
my French -English dic-
tionary translates as the
"last straw"! )
