HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1981-11-04, Page 11Host Mitchell, tonight Irish beat Bothwell,lose to Braves The Lucan Irish scored a crunching 13.1 win over the Bothwell Barons Sunday afternoon to even their week's record in the OHA Western Junior D grouping. Wednesday, the Irish held the defending OHA cham- pion Belmont Somers to a 3- 3 tie and Friday they were downed 5-2 by the Tavistock Braves. The next home game for the Irish will be tonight, Wednesday at the Lucan arena when they take on the Mitchell Hawks. Sunday they travel to Port Stanley. In the 3-3 Wednesday tie with Belmont all of the scor- ing was confined to the last two periods. In the final 20 minutes of play, Paul Wraith converted a pass from Jamie Shipley and Ron Glenn registered on an unassisted effort for the -Irish and Mark Hein then scored twice for the Bombers. John Medd and Ron Glenn were the Lucan marksmen in Friday's 5-2 loss to Tavistock. Medd clicked on a pass from Art Gregory in the first stanza and Glenn completed a three-way ef- fort in the final session on passes from Keith Hartwick and Ken McManus. For Tavistock Rob Froese was the top scorer with a two goal effort while single scores were added by Paul Albrecht, Ted Gladding and Ken Wettlaufer. The Irish wasted little time in Sunday's contest in Bothwell in showing they meant business in getting back to their winning ways. They scored six times in the first period. The game was less than three minutes old when Dean Scott converted a pass from Todd Charlton. Art Gregory provided assists on each of the next four goals; Geoff Edwards pulled the trigger on two of these goals with Dave Egan and Doug Latta getting the others. Near the end of the initial frame John Medd made the score 6-0 on a pass from Scott. Geoff Edwards completed his hat trick performance with" an unassisted second period marker. Dave Egan provided a pass for Ken McManus and scored himself on a play started by Todd Charlton. The last middle stanza goal was the same as the final in the first period with Medd scoring from Scott. In the third period Dean Scott fired two successful shots and John Medd hit the mark on one occasion and they both ended up with three goal efforts for the afternoon. Ed Dobinson was in goal for the Irish in Sunday's game while Dan Sceli was. between the pipes for the first two games of the week. START SECOND SEASON — Exeter natives Paul and Perry Pooley are starting their_ second season with the Ohio State University Buckeyes hockey club. In the 1980-81 season Paul had the finest season any Buckeye freshman has ever had as he scored 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points and was nam- ed co -rookie of the year in the CCHA. The Buckeyes scored the first and last goals of the game and they proved to be the margin of difference. Gerald Weido and Steve Bedour each scored two goals to lead the Buckeyes to victory. Scoring in single fashion were Pat Bedard, captain John Graham and Marvin Merner. Junior girls split The junior girls basketball team split their games last week, defeating Wingham 46-28 in a regular season contest, Wednesday, but losing 44-21 to an aggressive Woodstock College Avenue squad, Monday. In a slow game, that was plagued by close to 40 jump balls, Janet Pfaff led South Huron with 11 points, Janet Ferguson, Jackie Cottrell and Charlene Verbeek had 8, 7 and 6 points respectively. Verbeek had six points in the Panther's loss to College Avenue. South Huron failed to take advantage of their shooting opportunities. "We're in a mid-season slump, three-quarters of the way through", said coach Pat Rowe.
