Caring is theme for Presbyterian conference in Exeter
Caring was the theme at
the Stratford Presbyterian
fall conference hosted by the
Caven Presbyterian
Women's Missionary Society
last week.
The group discussed the
problems of the disabled and
how to help the disabled
become more a part of the
church.
Wendy Hines,public
education co-ordinator for
the Mentally Handicapped in
the district of South Huron,
discussed how mental
retardation occurs and
discussed how women can
prevent it, before they
become pregnant.
Hines said genetic coun-

recommended that women
make sure they are immune
to German measles before
planning a pregnancy.
Hines said 80 percent of
retarded people are only
mildly retarded, and of
these, 80 percent live in
poverty conditions.
She said parenting classes
should be taught in high
school and recommended
good pre -natal care for a
healthy baby.

Industries and she told the
group of ladies about the
work done there.
A nursery school is set up
across the street from ARC
for disabled children and she
showed slides of several
children who attend it and
explained the programs they
are involved in. Hines said
the 20 volunteers are a very
important part of the nur-
sery school program in
which nine children are
enrolled.
She explained how the
work is done at ARC
Industries including the fact
that they get industrial
contracts for such things as
drainage flag markers.
She said the bakery em-
ployees five people and they
take orders for wedding
cakes as well as being able to
cater a hot meal for up to 30
people.
"Life skills" are taught to
the handicapped to help
them cope with the outside
world on their own.
These skills include
teaching them personal
grooming habits, how to
make change, and cooldng
and cleaning habits.
She also showed a film
called "Exploding the

The mystery is finally
solved! The 4-H Homemak-

involved quite extensively in
both areas of chicken and

different methods of cutting
them up and methods of
cookery to utilize all parts of
the bird.
They've thrown parties us-
