FOR LIFE,
The Panthers rebounded
from a 21-6 half-time deficit
against Norwell to defeat the
Redman, 39-21.
A 50 yard pass and run
major from quarterback
Larry Mathers to Steve
Ferguson early in the third
quarter put South Huron on
the winning track. In the
second half, running back
Dave Hayter ran for four
touchdowns using the
famous "Panther sweeps",
running play.
Hayter also scored the lone
Panther major in the first
half. Greg Hern converted
three of the six majors.
The Panthers romped to
an easy 42-6 victory
Tuesday, against Stratford
Central. Greg Hern ran for
three touchdowns and kicked
four converts. Rick Gilfillan
ran for his first major of the
year. Larry Mathers scored
on a quarterback sneak and
Dave Hayter completed the
scoring when he ran for a
fourth quarter major.
The juniors travel to
Listowel in semi-final play,
Thursday, when they will try
and avenge their 7-2 regular
season loss to the Lords.
Bad weather
for runners
"The conditions were
terrible: muddy, cold andj
wet.", said South Huron
crosscountry coach Joe
Fulop about Thursday's
Huron -Perth championships
in Exeter. Despite the near -
freezing temperatures and
pouring rain, South Huron
had three team cham-
pionships and two individual
winners at the meet.
Irene Dietrich ran to a
surprisingly easy victory in
the midget girls' race to give
her team the championship
over Stratford Central.
Colleen Regier ran through
the chest -high Ausable River
to place fourth. Colleen
Bedard and Angela Fleming
were ninth and eleventh
respectively.
Matt McClure led from
start to finish to win the
senior boys' race and help
the team to their second title
in three years. John Van
Esbroeck ran well to finish
fifth.
"They ran their best
tactical race of the year by
getting out in front and
staying there," Fulop said
about the senior boys'
performance on the muddy
course.
Jim Regier and Mike Van
Raay were sixth and
seventh, respectively. Dan
mute, recently returned
from an ankle injury to finish
fifteenth. Nineteenth place
went to Mike Fleming.
"The senior girls' per-
formed according to ex-
pectations even though three
girls didn finish", Fulop
said. "They still had more
than enough depth to win
Huron -Perth."
Carla Soloman was third
and Susan Birmingham was
fourth as the senior girls
placed five runners in the top
ten. Esther Van Oss and
Mary Lou Rundle demon-
strated their potential with
sixth and seventh place
finishes respectively.
Catherine "Pitts" Pat-
terson was tenth in her best
race of the season. Susan
McClure was fourteenth.
The midget boys were four
points out of second to finish
third in the Huron -Perth, and
qualify for WOSSA com-
petition. Dan Morley led the
midgets with his sixth place
finish. Raymond Lewis, Jack
Fitzgerald and Sharon
O'Rourke completed the first
four.
By virtue of their Huron -
Perth showing, all four
teams will compete at
WOSSA, this Friday, in
Alvinston at the A.W.
Campbell Conservation
Area.
