Senior girls win seventh game
In Huron -Perth action, last
week, the South Huron senior
girls basketball team
defeated Stratford Nor-
thwestern and Norwell of
Palmerston to remain un-
defeated with a record of 7-0
and earn a number 8 ranking
in The London Free Press
WOSSA top 10.
Thursday, against Nor-
thwestern, the Panthers
lacked intensity in the early
going and were down 15-14,
at the half. However, the
girls roared back in the
second half to win 35-18 and
add to their reputation as a
second half ball club.
A change in defence from a
2-3 zone to a 3-2 formation
took away Northwestern's.
outside shot and helped
South Huron to hold the
Huskies to just three points
in the second half. Maja
Gans had 17 points and Cindy
Down added five points to
lead South Huron scorers.
Despite the absence of
starters Deb Taylor and Lori
Brand, South Huron doubled
Palmerston Norwell, 50-25,
Wednesday. Maja Gans, had
a season high 28 points and
Leslie Hunter-Duvar added
10 points for the win.
"The number 8 ranking
doesn't mean anything
now," said coach Terry
O'Rourke. "But it is nice to
know that other teams know
we exist."

In a weekend tournament
in Windsor, South Huron lost
36-24 to Sarnia Central. "We
missed some close shots that
could have made the dif-
ference," O'Rourke said.
Maja Gans scored twelve
points and Deb Taylor added
four points in the losing
effort.
"We should have put them
away earlier." O'Rourke
said about the Panthers 36-27

half proved to be their
downfall against Stratford
Northwestern as they lost 30-
20.
"We couldn't put the ball
in the basket in the first
half," coach Pat Rowe said
about the game, Thursday,
against Northwestern. The
undefeated Huskies beat
South Huron's press to lead
20-7 at the half.
However, the team didn't
lose composure and battled
back to within four points in
the third quarter. Charlene
Verbeek scored eight points
to lead the Panthers. Brenda
Bell and Dana Bozzato each
had four points.
Janet Pfaff returned from
a knee injury to score 14
points and lead South Huron
to its win over Norwell ,
Wednesday. The Pan-
ther defence was especially
tenacious as they held
Palmerston to just four
points in the first half. Jackie
Cottrell had thirteen points.
In a weekend tournament
at London Westminster,
South Huron defeated
Laurier 26-19 only to lose in
the semi-final to eventual
winner Saunders, 36-16.
The Panthers got into
early foul trouble against
Saunders when centre
Charlene Verbeek fouled out
in the first half. "Saunders
had a good zone, and my
girls just wouldn't put up any
shots," coach Rowe said.
Charlene Verbeek had six
points. Jackie Cottrell had
nine points and Janet Pfaff
had seven points against the
Laurier squad.
The juniors will be out to
better their 5-2 record when
they face Wingham at home
today.
against Grimsby. Gans and
Taylor had twenty-three and
six points respectively to
advance the team to the
third round.
Gans scored thirteen
points and Deb Taylor added
8 points as the Panthers lost
33-28 to Chatham
MacGregor. The team faces
Wingham at home today and
will travel to Sault Ste.
Marie for a tournament this
weekend.
