Outline views of parenting
at fellowship group's session
Ladies community
fellowship last week hosted
a meeting where the topic of
parenting was discussed by
two guest speakers.
Wendy Hines of the
Association of the Mentally
Handicapped told the ladies
they could prevent mental
retardation in their children
if they looked after
themselves during their
pregnancy.
Marie McKinnon, a Grand
Bend resident, shopkeeper,
and mother of two, sang two
songs for the 45 ladies in
attendance. The songs were
"Otte Day at a Time" and
"Lord, Don't Move That
Mountain". She discussed
the ways that the Bible has
set down for people to be
good parents.
This was the second
monthly meeting of the
group organized in part by
Nell DeJong and Lois
Gonyou.
Hines, the public
awareness co-ordinator for
South Huron and District
Association for. the Mentally
Handicapped told the ladies

mentally handicapped. She
said this number can be
drastically reduced if
women look after
themselves.
She said genetic counsell-
ing is a good idea for any
woman 35 years of a$e and
older who is thinking of
becoming pregnant. This
should occur about three
months before the baby is
conceived. Part of the
testing should include
resistance to German and
Red measles, blood incom-
patibilities and a check for
any infections in the bladder
and kidneys.
When discussing pre -natal
care, she said abstinence
from drugs, alcohol, and
cigarettes would not hurt the
baby. She said 14% of the
mothers who smoke, have
low birth -weight babies.
Another statistic she quoted
was that women of child -
MR. AND MRS. STEVEN BIBBY
Tammy Louise Schenk, daughter of Gerry and Rita Schenk of
Crediton, and Steven Paul Bibby, son of Bob and Lois Bibby of
RR 1 St. Marys, were married at Zion United Church,
Crediton, Oct. 10. Officiating clergyman for the double ring
ceremony was Rev. Brian Elder. The maid of honour was Lorie
Schenk and bridesmaids were Dianne Wilds and Mauro
McVeeney. The best man was Ted Bibby and the groom's men
were Steve Barr and Dave Blackler. After a honeymoon to
Niagara Falls, the couple has taken up residence at Huron
Park.

Hines said babies are
given two tests as soon as
they are born for two dis-
orders which, if treated at
birth, can prevent a poten-
tially retarded child from
becoming thus afflicted.
She suggests that human
relations classes in high
school are a good idea, and
teenage parents are not
mature enough, either
emotionally or biologically,
to be good parents.
Hines said any suspected
cases of child abuse should
be reported immediately
and that some people, such
as single parents. and
teenagers are more prone to
child abuse.
Hines concluded her talk
by warning parents to be
careful with poisons in the
house and to make sure toys
and equipment are safe.
After a brief intermission,
Marie McKinnon looked up
several scripture passages
and explained how they can
help make a person a better
parent.
Children use their parents
as role -models, she said,
therefore it is important for
parents to display the kind of
values they want to be
prominent in their children.
Among the scriptures she
quoted were Deuteronomy
6:1-9, Psalm 78:1-8,
Ephesians 6:4 and Romans
12:2.
She said it is important to
teach children God's laws,
and communication through
prayer.
McKinnon stressed that a
positive attitude is
necessary in raising a
healthy child.
An example of negative at-
titude, she said is the press.
When the Royal Wedding
was on television. she said,
even the commentators talk-
ed about how nice it was to
be reporting on good news.
She told the ladies to
"dare to live with positive
expectations". She finished
by saying children will
become what you expect of
them. it is important to ex-
pect the best.
A book table was set up at
the back of the hall where
"choice" books were being
sold. Choice hooks are in-
spirational books sold at no
profit.
