The South Huron cross country team which usually doesn't fulfil its potential un- til late in the season is ahead of schedule. judging from performances in last week's meets. Last Wednesday, at the Stratford Northwestern Road Races. Matt McClure, Mike Van Raay and Jim Regier were 4th, 7th and 9th enroute to a Second place team finish. one point behind Stratford Central. Carla Solomon was 8th to help the junior girls to third place. Dan Morley led the midgets to their 3rd place as well with a placing of 9th. Colleen Regier and Irene Dietrich had impressive high school debuts as they were 4th and 5th respective- ly on the midget girls category. South Huron had 2nd, 3rd and 4th place team showings in the W -Club Invitational at Western Friday. In the senior boy's division, Matt McClure crossed the finish line first to help the team to its second place showing. Mike Van Raay. most im- proved runner on the team thus far this season, was 16th and Jim Regier was right behind in 17th place. Irene Dietrich, Colleen Regier and Angela Fleming were 4th. 5th and 16th respectively to grab third place in midget girl's com- petition. "The midget girls have been a surprise. They could finish second to Stratford Central at Huron Perth", Fulop said. John Van Esbroeck was 14th and Dan Shute ran to an 18th place standing in the tough junior boy's category at Western. The pair also competed in the three mile high school race at Springbank. Sunday. "The junior girls should be awesome. There certainly is a lot of depth. but we haven't had them all run together in one race yet.'• Fulop said. Susan Birmingham was 10th and led the junior girl's to their team placing of 9th. Rounding out the top four were Judi Van Oss, Alice Dietrich and Esther Van Oss in 12th. 13th and 16th place respectively. This year. Fulop has adopted a system of group practices at noonhours and after school which he feels has boosted both team morale and performance. The team travels to Parkhill tomorrow. and to the London Ski Club Saturday, for meets. Junior girl Gagers have two victories The junior girls' basket- ball team from South Huron has two wins and a loss, including a 39-13 regular season win over St. Marys, after its first week of ac- tion. In "The Stonetown", Brenda Bell had a career high 14 points and Janet Pfaff added 10 points to lead South Huron scorers. Due to "over'aggresive" play, the team got into early foul trouble. As a result, the game took nearly two hours to play. Monday the team easily downed Woodstock Collegiate squad, 37-13. Janet Pfaff and Joanne Miller had 11 and 10 points respectively. Against Strathroy, Thursday, South Huron was outplayed in its first real test. "High scorers Janet Pfaff and Joanne Miller have been pleasant surprises so far". Coach PEA Rowe said of the pair's performance. The team hosts Parkhill today, Wednesday and travels to Clinton tomorrow for a regular season match. Rick Lindenfield had a career high as he ran for 236 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries. "The team played better than I expected they would at this point in the season. The score could have been a Cowgirls lose first in final The Crediton Cowgirls went on to the finals after beating Ailsa Craig 11-6 but lost their first final playoff game Monday night to Denfield 17-3. In their second game against Ailsa Craig they had a tight battle by not taking the lead until the second inning. From then on Crediton kept the lead never allowing Ailsa Craig to catch up. Leading the Cowgirls at the plate was Deb Lord with a home run, triple and two singles. Next was Shelley Weber with two doubles and a single and Sandy O'Neill added a double and two singles. Kate Steeper banged out a home run in the second and Barb Mitchell added one in the seventh to help take the win. Singles were hit by Carol Stuart, Brenda Wilds and Wilma Lagerwerf. Leading Ailsa Craig at the bat was Joanne Scott with a home run and single and Linda Wasnidge added a double and single. Brenda Wilds started Crediton strong on the mound and Merna Scott ended the game superbly by striking out the last two batters. The first final game Monday night against Denfield was a disaster for Crediton almost from the start. Crediton couldn't get their act together and ended up dragging until the end of the game. Leading the Cowgirls with their bats were Deb Lord, Tammy Regier, Shelley Weber and Kate Steeper. Leading Denfield was Sheila Hodgins with three triples and a double. Pitching for Crediton were Brenda Wilds and Deb Lord. Winning pitcher for Denfield was Carol Kish. Next playoff game is tonight, Wednesday, in Ilderton at 8:00 p.m. and then back to Crediton Sun- day afternoon at 2 p.m. Centennials beat Sarnia Sunday night under the lights at Norm Perry Park in Sarnia against the team from St. Clair Hotel, the Exeter Senior Centennial soccer team played a strong game in winning their first playoff game by a score of 6- 1. Despite playing the first half against a strong wind Exeter scored the first goal with forward John Muller taking a pass from half Gerald Weersink and making no mistake on his shot. Exeter scored the second goal as striker Paul Van- dewalle put a nice low drive to the left side. Although Exeter controlled 99 percent of the first half, St. Clair Hotel capitalized on that one percent to finish the half at 2- 1 for Exeter. The Centennials didn't let up in the second half as they took it to St. Clair by scoring four more goals. Paul Vandewalle got his second and third of the night. Left winger Shawn Rotteau playing one of his better games scored the other two. The strong defensive corps of Dave Holmes, Bill White, Mike Janjn and Joe Laurie held St. Clair to only one shot on Exeter goalie Blair Buridge in the second half. Halves Dick Lord, Gerald Weersink and Alfonce Weersink played a strong game in supporting both the defence and offense. Exeter now enters the A round of the playoffs and plays this coming weekend with exact time, place and team not determined yet. Exeter, Lucan and Cen- tralia College have organized a mini tournament which will take place over the next two weeks. Each game will start at 6:30 p.m. and last one hour with half hour halves. South Huron upped their lead to 40-8 at the half as the result of a 30 yard run for a major by Lindenfield in the last minute. Other. first half scores came on a 70 yard punt return by Pete Tuckey, a 20 yard pass from quarterback Bill Slaver to Jim Siddall and runs by Lindenfield of seven and 25 yards. The most impressive play came however, when Lin- denfield ran 72 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. "Except for 2 or 3 mental lapses, our defence played excellently", Bogart said. South Huron's pass rush effectively limited Listowel to 66 yards in the air as well as forcing the Lord's quarterback to throw three interceptions. Greg Prout returned one interception 20 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Lindenfield ran for another major in the second half and Pete Tuckey caught a 22 yard pass from Sloven for the other touchdown. Wayne Smith showed marked improvement in his running as he rushed for 68 yards on 12 carries, as well u kicking seven converts.
