Victory turns into defeat "We snatched defeat from the jaws of victory", commented South Huron junior football coach Dave Cox, after the team's 7-2 regular season loss to Listowel, Thursday. Two of South Huron's six fumbles were made on Listowel's one yard line in what should have been scoring plays. The Panthers' lone two points came on a safety touch by Doug Cooper in Listowel's end zone. "We amassed more yards offense than Listowel, but we just missed our op- portunities", Cox said. The team suffered nearly 100 yards in penalties in- cluding several calls for unsportsmanlike conduct. In an exhibition match, Tuesday, at Stratford North- western, the team triumphed 30-7 over the Huskies. Greg Hern ran in three touch- downs for the Panthers and Dave Hayter had two majors. All the scores remained unconverted. Despite the win, Cox wasn't pleased with his team's performance. "We didn't play well or we would have really beat them," he said. Thus far the defence has been the only dependable facet of the team. The squad will be trying to get their first regular season win at home tomorrow, Thursday at 1:30 p.m. against Clinton. October 6 the team will host F.E. Madill of Wingham for a ular season game. . . Maja Gans and Deb Taylor led the strong team effort with 11 and 8 points respec- tively. Defensively, Lori Brand snatched nine rebounds and several steals in the fast paced game. Leslie Hunter - Duvar also had six points. The win advanced South Huron into the semi-finals where they met Hamilton Bishop Ryan, the number one ranked high school team in the province. Turnovers were South Huron's nemesis as the girls were trounced 86-20 by the tough Hamilton squad. "Our goal was to score 20 points and we did that. We showed we can play with just about anyone, even if we can't beat them", coach Terry O'Rourke said about the Hamilton game. Lori Brand ,and Cindy Down led South Huron with six points each. In a regular season contest Wednesday, against St. Marys, South Huron out- matched the inferior Saluki squad, 42-9. Leading South Huron scorers were Barb Skinner and Deb Taylor with eight and six points respectively. South Huron's defence was much improved when they faced strong Strathroy op- position. Thursday. Although the girls lost 33-16, O'Rourke was pleased with their play. "We're about where we expected to be this time of the year. Everyone's getting about equal time as we try to figure out a sarting lineup," O'Rourke said.
