One up and one down
Enrolment on opening day
was down from the pro-
jected figures in Huron
County reported superinten-
dent of education W. D.
Kenwell of the County's
Board of Education.
At its September meeting,
Kenwell informed the
trustees opening day enrol-
ment across the county was
10,696 students, while the
projected figure was 10,776,
down 80 students. He added
if the enrolment figures
follow the same pattern as
they have in the past few
years, the 80 students will
show up during the year.
At the elementary school
level, 6,633 students showed
up opening day, while the
board projected 6,721. At the
secondary school level, 4,001
students showed up, while
the hoard projected 3,992
would register.
At the schools for the
trainable mentally retarded
62 students enrolled whilethe
board's projected figure was
63 students.

At the Wednesday regular
meeting of Usborne township
council, building inspector
Herman Van Wieren
reported issuing five
building permits during the
month of August with a total
value of $63,000.
Van Wieren also issued one
demolition permit and
carried out 30 inspections.
The Ontario Home
Renewal Plan report in-
dicated completion of one
project at a cost of $5,400.
Reeve Murray Dawson has
accepted an invitation to
represent the township at the
annual cow milking contest
at Exeter Fair on Saturday,
September 26.
Council will be contacting
the waste control officer to
work out a Saturday mor-
ning schedule if possible.
The contractor installing
tile drainage in the area of
the Thames Road park will
be instructed to install an
adequate drainage system in
the park to provide for a
second ball diamond and
improved parking facilities.
Council will be meeting
September 28 with the
Huron County planning
department for the
presentation of phase two of
the comprehensive Zoning
bylaw.
Usborne ratepayers in-
volved in the Scott municipal
drain in Hibbert township
will be informed of a meeting
to read the drain report on
September 21.
A grant of 850 was made to
the Huron Plowmen's
Association.

A Brantford man, involved
in real estate transactions in
the Vanastra area of
Tuckersmith Township, was
assessed a fine of 820,003.96
when he appeared in Kit-
chener court to face charges
of wilfully evading payment
of federal income tax.
John VanGastel, 7 Oakley
Road, Brantford, pleaded
guilty to the charge before
Judge Peter Wilch, who was
told that the accused failed
to report income of ;53,774.53
during the years 1970-71-73-
74-75.The tax on that amount
was ;20,003.96. The fine
levied was equal to the tax
owing.
Van Gastel was given one
year to pay or the alternative
of 160 days in jail.
