That's the question being asked by the executive of the Exeter Mohawks in- termediate hockey club. Manager Lewis Mitchell has informed us that only a dozen players attended the first practice Saturday and three of those were only out for a skate and com- mitted to other teams. Mitchell says if more interest isn't shown the team will have to fold and he added, "We certainly don't want that to happen and the league is also very con- cerned about our situation." A few weeks ago we said in this column that the South Huron league was down to six teams with the withdrawal of teams from Forest and Parkhill. The number has now been reduced to five as the Goderich Merchants have decided to pull out. At the moment the only teams raring to go are the Zurich Buckeyes, Hensall Sherwoods, Centralia College Saints and the Centralia Marauders. Jack Chipchase will assume the full time coaching duties of the Mohawks with Mitchell in charge of managerial duties. Any players wishing to join the Mohawks are urg- ed to attend the next practice which is set for this Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Stephen township arena at Huron Park or they may get in touch' with Mitchell or Chipchase • Solid fans Whether the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League are on their way to a Super Bowl or not doing so well, their fans continue to be faithful. When the Steelers defeated the New York Jets Sunday. it was the 75th consecutive time that Three River Stadium in Pittsburgh was sold out for a Steeler home game. The Steelers JPesponded to the home stadium sup- port Sunday by beating the New York Jets for their first win in three starts. In Canadian football, the Hamilton Tiger Cats con- tinue to be the only team in the east with any con- sistency in winning over western clubs. 'The way things are shaping up now, the third place team in the east could clinch the last playoff spot with only one victory. The Montreal• Alouettes have won 'only one game but appear to be safely entrenched in a playoff position as the Toronto Argonauts remain winless and don't seem to have much chance to change that situation. In Saturday night's game in British Columbia the Argos looked a bit improved for the first half, but quickly worsened in the remainder of the game. The Argos cause for the balance of the current season is likely hopeless. A new coach won't solve the problems. Up to now the Argos have had 130 players in camp. A goodly number in Saturday's game were in a double blue uniform for the first time. The coaching switch in Montreal has apparently caused the team to become sharply divided. Assistant coaches Gene Gaines and Jim Erkenbeck were more than perturbed when assistant Jim Eddy was named head coach replacing Joe Scannella. Scannella won't need to line up at the unemploy- ment windows for awhile. He will get about $100,000 a year for the next two years. The Alouettes are holding a special Peter Dalla Riva day on October 24 to honour the veteran tight end on his impending retirement. Rumours that Dorchester native Glenn Weir was also going to hang up the cleats were flying arounda few weeks ago. but the big fellow has since said they are untrue and he will be back in the Montreal front wall come 1982. It's interesting to note that Baltimore Colts of the NFL have voted 25-16 to keep women reporters out of their dressing rutin after games. Individual teams in the league set their own policy on accessibility totheir locker rooms by media people. Great despite strike Its hard t•, say what kind of records Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers would be set- ting if the 1981 baseball season had not been in- terrupted by the strike. Despite missing 50 games and probably about another 12 starting assignments. Velenzuela has already equalled a 68 year record of eight shutouts in a rookie year. With a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Thursday night. the 20 year-old Mexican sensation equalled the mark set by Ewell Russell of the Chicago White Sox in 1913. Valenzuela is also the first National league pitcher to win 13 games this year. Fle has only lost four times and has an earned run average of 2.36. The chunky left hander will get at least three more starts in the regular season His great showing has brought out record crowds at Dodger Stadium: When he pitched Thursday night there were 46.168 fans on hand compared to 19.905 the night before. Close finish The final two weeks of the big league ball season will be exciting with close races in three of the four divisions. In the :American league's eastern division the Detroit Tigers hold a slim lead in first place with only three and a half games separating the first six teams. Incidentally the Toronto Blue Jays are the team in sixth place. but. only three and a half games off the pace. If the Jays were in the western division they would be tied with the Oakland A's for second place As of Monday morning the Blue Jays have a better season record than the Montreal Expos. be it only one percentage point. The Expos remain In strong conten- tion in the National league. It will certainly be an interesting two weeks as a lot of teams make a big rush at either first or second place as the case may he with the split season system in effect. r PLENTY OF HOPEFULS - Exeter Hawks coach Ron Bogart had about 35 area hockey players out to the first two team try- outs staged at Huron Park over the weekend. About 35 attended the initial team try -outs at Huron Park this weekend and some .area players are still in Junior "B" and "C" camps and could be coming hack to seek positions. There were six goaltenders out for the weekend. The include Rich Fletcher and Steve Wells who toiled between the pipes for the Hawks last season. Astros vs Irish iri final The Lucan Astros ad- vanced to the finals of the .Southwestern Fastbatl League by defeating Nairn Royals three games to one in the best of five semi finals. Tuesday night the Astros travelled to Nairn for an en- counter with the Royals. Nairn exploded with four runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 7-4 victory over the Astros. Paul Gilmour led I,ucan witha two run homer Scot McNair and Jim Benn each collected three his each. Sunday with the series tied at a game apiece a clutch two out two run homer by Paul Wraight enabled the Astros to a 7-5 victory over Nairn. Ray collected four hits in leading the Astros attack.
