At Thames Road Celebrate 100 years By MRS. WILLIAM ROHDE THAMES ROAD Eighty one ladies attended the United Church Women's Banquet last Monday evening. The tables were decorated with purple and yellow. In front of each plate there was a little hat with a purple ribbon around it and a yellow feather which looked very nice. A beautiful cake and a replica of the church which was made and decorated by Mrs. John Pym adorned the table. A delicious smorgasbord meal was partaken of. After the meal, president Mrs. Murray Dawson welcomed everyone, former members as well as our own ladies. Mrs. Glen Stewart in- troduced the head table. Mrs. Ross Hodgert thanked the ladies of the Hurondale Women's institute who looked after the meal and did the dishes. Mrs. Rick Parker led in a sing song of old songs ac- companied by Mrs. Reg Hodgert on the piano. Miller read the Scripture Lesson !Matthew 16:13-19. The Meditation was given b Mrs. Ted Kernick. A minute silence was observed for those who have departed. Mrs. Ross Hodgert led in prayer. Mrs. Reg Hodgert in- troduced the guest singers Mrs. George Sereda and Mrs. Don Hooper of Exeter who sang two lovely num- bers. They were thanked by Mrs. Fred Johns who also presented them with gifts. Mrs. Ken Duncan in- troduced Mrs. Jean Mair of London who spoke on "Yesterday and To -day". She reminisced of when she and her husband the late Rev. William Mair came to the Thames Road Charge in 1935 and stayed until 1952. It was a very interesting and informative talk which was much enjoyed. Mrs. Donald Bray thanked Mrs. Mair and presented her with a bud vase with ayellow rase in it. Mrs. William Rohde read several replies from ladies who could not attend the banquet, among them was one from Ruth H. Taylor of Toronto. Mrs. Dawson closed the program with a verse. President Mrs. Grace Drummond welcomed everyone. Roll call was answered by saying "What I like about living in Canada". Mrs Grant MacLean read the minutes and the treasurer's report. Mrs. Stewart Pepper gave the Sunshine report. It was reported that visits had been made to shut-ins. Mrs. Al Hoggarth reported that the 441 Girls Club have begun their sessions on "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" There are two clubs. leaders are: Mrs. Al Hoggarth and Mrs. Gary Finlayson, Mrs. Stewart Wilson. Mrs. Alex Townsend with about 19 girls taking the club. Mrs. Harold Parsons con- ducted the program and in- troduced her new neighbour Mrs. Wisch who was the guest speaker. Mrs. Wisch described their life in Germany, their reasons for coming to Canada and their happiness in finding good neighbours. She was thanked by Mrs. Al Hoggarth. Mrs. Campbell Eyre gave a poem "Autumn" and Mrs. Charles Eyre gave her usual excellent motto on "Citizenship like Charity begins at home". She con- cluded with Terry Fox an an example of good citizenship. Mrs. Jack Sinclair gave an interesting article on the weather. "A smile" was sung. Mrs. Robert Kinsman gave Current Events and Courtesy Remarks. Lunch was served by the hostesses Mrs. Bell and Mrs. C. Eyre and the committee in charge. Mr and Mrs. Lewis Raycraft spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. James Spencer of Smith ('reek, Michigan and attend- ed the funeral of Mrs. Raycraft's cousin, John C. Duncan. of fort Huron. was omitted that we are getting more cook books printed. September 30 the South Huron Fall Regional Meeting will be held in Kippen United Church at 12:30. Guest speaker will be Father Williams of Strat- ford. Services on Sunday Sep- tember 27 at the usual hours 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Bloesing, Sarasota Florida visited a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ballantyne. Saturday evening the above four mentioned were supper guests with Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Passmore. Miss Brenda Ballantyne, Toronto spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Ballantyne and Wendy. Miss Barbara Miller, Toronto spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Miller.
