Taking a look at the
mediate area this week
baseball being featured.
A popular spot this week will be the Stephen
township arena where the final week of the Huron
Hockey School features the visit of 53 professionals.
Leading the influx are the Montreal Canadiens
with an even dozen players in camp including Pierre
Mondou, Doug Risebrough, Mario Tremblay and Doug
Wickenhauser.
This is at least the third trip to the Huron Hockey
School for Risebrough.
The visiting pros will finish each day of instruction
with a scrimmage slated to start at 8 p.m. Any area
fans wishing to drop into the Stephen arena at Huron
Park to see the scrimmages are more than welcome.
They continue tonight, Wednesday and tomorrow
night. Thursday. This is a great opportunity to not only
see some of the current top pros. but, the stars of
tomorrow as a lot of the NHL clubs send their promis-
ing junior draft choices to the local school for extra
coaching.
The Huron Hockey School is known throughout
North America as one of the best instructional schools.
Three of the fellows who started the school some nine
years ago are still around handing out hockey exper-
tise.
They are executive director Brian Gilmour and his
directors Bill Mahoney who is now the assistant coach
of the Washington Capitals and Ron Mason, coach of
the Michigan State University hockey team.
A couple of weeks ago we mistakingly said Mason
was the -coach at Bowling Green: Sorry Ron.
While on the subject of hockey, -the new summer
hockey league also being held at tie Stephen arena is
proving to be very popular.
Three games are held each Sunday and the brand
of hockey is excellent. This coming Sunday will see the
final day of the regular schedule with the playoffs to
start the following week.
The Red Army team remains undefeated. On the
Army roster are Paul and Perry Pooley who were
scoring stars with the Ohio State Buckeyes last year
and Dave Bogart from the University of Waterloo.
Hawks set to practice
The regular hockey season is not far away either.
Exeter junior Hawks manager Fred Mommersteeg
was in to see us a few days ago with information on his
team for the coming year.
One new team has been added to the OHA Western
Junior 'D' grouping. Joining the northern division will
be the Thedford Browns. The other,.teams are the
Hawks, the Lucan Irish, Seaforth, Tavistock and
Mitchell.
The southern division will remain the same with
Belmont. Bothwell, Port Stanley, Thamesford and
Mount Brydges.
The first practice for the Hawks is tentatively set
for the Stephen township arena at 7 p.m. on Saturday,
September 19.
The first exhibition game for the Hawks will be
October 4 when they travel to Thedford to meet the
newly organized Browns.
Action in the popular junior league should be
faster than ever this year. At a recent meeting, the
teams approved removing of the centre red line.
Football practice underway
Classes at South Huron District High School don't
get underway until next Tuesday. but, prospective
football players are already out to practice.
Senior Panthers coach Ron Bogart had 20 players
out to his first workout on the weekend in preparation
for the opening Huron -Perth Conference game slated
for Thursday. September 24.
On opening day. the Listowel junior and senior
clubs will he in to do doubleheader battle with the
Panthers.
Bogart said he hopes to get an exhibition game for
the previous Friday. The pre -season game for the past
four years which pitted the South Huron seniors
against Sir Arthur V'oaden of St. Thomas had to be
scrubbed when the St. Thomas team filled the date
with another club when they heard rumours the H -P
Conference might be folding.
The South Huron senior coach told us this week.
"It doesn't look too good for the future of conference
football. There seems to be some doubt if the Listowel
and two Stratford teams may continue much longer. It
wouldn't be worthwhile to try to play with only three
or four teams
Norwell of Palmerston has been added to the
senior grouping this year to bring the roster up to six
teams. The others are South Huron, Goderich,
Listowel and Stratford Central and Stratford
Northwestern.

The Tigers dropped the first game of the best -of -

right time. They left 10 men on the bases.
The second game will be played in Dashwood Sun-
day afternoon at 1 p.m. with a third game if necessary
going at 4 p.m. the same day.
Sunday's postponement due- to wet grounds was
probably favourable to the Tigers as it will give their
star southpaw pitcher .John Bruijns a chance to get
