help in cancer detection
Improvements in the
image quality of ultrasound
breastscanners developed by
Canadian scientists may
lead to a dignostic test
alternative to x-rays in the
detection of breast cancer.
Two models of ultrasound
breast scanners are being
tested to determine whether
the scanners are able to
consistently 'and reliably
detect abnormalities, says
Dr. John Hunt, of the
Division\ of Physics
Research, Ontario Cancer
Institute, Toronto.
Breast cancer kills more
Canadian women than any
other form of cancer, but if
the cancer is diagnosed when
the tumour is small and
therefore likely to he in an
early stage, women have a
better chance of surviving.
X-rays are among diagnostic
tools used for such detection.
Unlike x-rays, ultrasound
does not use radiation.
Instead, Dr. Hunt explains a
high -frequency sound is sent
into the body to bounce off
tissues. It sends echoes that
can be electronically
changed into maps of in-
ternal structures seen on a
TV screen. Its most familiar
use today is diagnosing
abnormalities in unborn
babies.
Ultrasound is a sensitive,
safe way to detect and to
visualize normal and ab-
normal soft tissues of the
body. As well, it is fast,
simple and painless.
Traditional scanners,
however, produce images

that lack sufficient
definition. Research funded
by the National Cancer
Institute of Canada, the
scientific arm of the
Canadian Cancer Society,
has led to furthur
refinements in the ability of
such scanners to produce
images that are far more
precise and sharper in
resolution.
During the test, a woman
lies on her back and a water -
filled device is lowered onto
the breasts. A rnachine scans
across the breast taking up
to 100 sections of sonar or
high frequency sound
readings. The resulting
three-demensional image
highlights tissue structures
and visualizes liquid -filled
and solid tissues.
Dr. Hunt says that furthur
research is needed to ensure
that the images produced by
the • scanner accurately
distinguish between normal
and cancerous tissues.
