Why does a cannibal
prefer a person who reads to
a person who writes?
Because readers' digest
and writers cramp.

Who invented the elephant
joke. the knock -knock joke"
What do they look like? How
do they act?
Are theyth a people who are
always the itte of the party
all night long? Or. are they
the quiet ones who sit un-
assumingly in a corner until.
with one quick line. they
make the whole crowd crack
up?
Do they dress outlandishly
and try kooky hairstyles that
other people can't even im-
agine wearing'' Do they
stand out in a crowd' I)o
they act in a manner that we
might terns "weird?" Or. do
they melt into a crowd and
appear quite ''normal
And host' do they conceive
those uncanny witticisms?
Can they crank out one-
liners on demand" Or. do
they take hours. days. even
weeks to develop an idea?
Does the whole story come
to them in a flash" Or. do the
parts fall together in bits
and pieces?
Dc they lock themselves in
their rooms emerging hours
later with one quip and leav-
ing behind enough crumbled
paper to carpet the floor"
Do ideas come to them out
of the blue" If so. schen and
where - in the middle of the
night. when they're driving
their cars. when they're
shopping" Do they always
carry paper and pen with
them. or better yet a tape
recorder. to keep story lines
from slipping away'?
I wonder if joke writers
laugh at their own gags. And
who do they use as guinea
pigs tc try their stories on?
The next time you see
someone laughing alone in
their car orgrinningat a can
of beans. maybe they're not
crazy. It could be they've
just thought of a brand new
joke.
If they notice you staring
at them. maybe they'll try
out the gag on you. If it's
funny. you can repeat it at
the next party and perhaps
even call it your own.

Women teachers discuss bill
The problems of Bill 82, the
new Ontario law on special
education, dominated
discussion at the annual
meeting of the Federation of
Women Teachers'
Associations of Ontario in
Toronto this week.The 600
delegates representing the
30,000 women teachers in
Ontario's elementary public
schools heard Dr. Madeline
Hardy, Director of
Education for the London
Board of Education,
describe the new law as
"landmark legislation".
The delegates agreed
unanimously on the need for
guarantees of adequate
provincial funding to make
the new law work. Several
speakers warned that lack of
money could prevent the
achievement of the aims of
the Legislation which at-
tempts to ensure special
education for every child
who needs it.
Provincial President
Patricia Carson warned of
the possibility of'U.S. style
lawsuits under the special
education legislation
because parents may sue if

In other business,the
delegates approved a
statement of priorities
which included concern
about the growth of private
schools and the increasing
conservatism and elitism of
Canadian society. They
confirmed their com-
