Celebrate Oakwood opening
About 100 people attended
a party Wednesday evening
to celebrate the grand open-
ing of Oakwood Inn under
new owner Dave Scatchard.
Greeting guests were
manager Bill Keunecke and
pro shop operator Gene
Grenier, along with the
Scatchards.
Highlight of the evening
was a fire works display, put
on by Grenier. The display
concluded with a set of
special Hawaiian
firecrackers. The
Pedestrian dies,
driver charged
The driver of the car
which struck and killed a
pedestrian in (:rand Bend
late Tuesday evening has
been charged with impaired
driving. A spokesman for the
Ontario Provincial Police at
Grand Bend said that the
driver, Ronald Woodburn,
42, of Parkhill was given a
breathalyzer test and found
to have more than 80
milligrams of alMhol in his
blood.
The spokesman added that
the crown attorney is being
consulted on further
charges.
Dead is Wayne Daniel
Voisin, 19, of Stratford. The
accident occurred about
11:05 p.m. Tuesday. Voisin
died Wednesday in Universi-
ty Hospital, London.
The accident took place on
highway 83 at the corner of
Gill Road near the Patio
Motel.
Scatchards live in Hawaii,
and had brought the
firecrackers with them for
the special night.
Scatchard said that the
loud firecrackers are usually
set off in Hawaii at midnight
on New Year's Eve. He said
that at times, the smoke is
so thick from the many fire
crackers, drivers are forced
to pull over to the side of the
road.
Scatchard is orginally
from London, but spent his
summers at Oakwood as a
boy. His father was one of
the founders of St. John's-by-
-iake Anglican Church.
Scatchard lived in
Calgary, before moving to
Hawaii where he met his
wife Valerie. They have
three children, John, 13,
Colin, 11, and Helene, 7.
They will be returning to
Hawaii at the end of the
summer.
Scatchard purchased the
golf course, lodge and
restaurant earlier this
season. His long terms plans
include the expansion of the
country club to include a
pool, and other recreation
facilities. He also hopes to
promote the Inn as a year
round resort with cross
country skiing in the winter,
he said.
