sixth inning with the time
limit expired. The close
game went into extra in-

Area girls play
for Canada's best
When the Milverton
Millwrights displayed their
talents on the diamond in
Exeter earlier this summer,
they were billed as one of the
better junior ladies' fastball
teams in Canada.
On Sunday, they moved to
the top of the ladder as they
became Canadian cham-
pions.
Two Osborne Township
athletes, Patti Down, RR 1
Hensall, and Sheila Penhale,
RR 1 Woodham, are
members of the team which
dropped only one game
enroute to the Canadian
title which brought 12 teams
to Milverton last week.
In the preliminary round,
the Millwrights beat
Newfoundland and B.C. by
identical 7-3 counts and
clobbered Manitoba 9-1.
Their lone loss was to New
Brunswick by a 4-0 verdict.
The three wins tied them
with B.C. and Alberta for
second place behind Ontario
in the double elimination
championship.
In the first game in that
showdown, Milverton beat
Ontario, represented by
Oakville, by a 2-1 count in
extra innings. They came
back later on Saturday to
beat Newfoundland by 3-2,
also in extra innings.
That gave Milverton,
chosen to play in the tour-
nament as host centre, a
berth in the Sunday final
against Alberta and they
won 2-1.
Patti Down, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Down,
made one pitching ap-
pearance in the tournament,
while Sheila Penhale,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Emerson Penhale, played
several of the games at third
base and contributed several
hits to thatinningefforts.

Tigers win opener
The Dashwood Tigers
scored three runs in the bot-
tom of the ninth inning to
stage a thrilling comeback
and beat Servicemaster 7-6
in Dashwood, Friday.
The win gave the Tigers
the first game in their best -

with the loop winners. Se-

Really was
reversed
Playing hockey in the
summer appears to be
reversing things, but in one
game at Huron Park this
Sunday. a further reversal
was in evidence.
While pulling a goalie in
the final seconds of a game
is not unusual, one of Sun-
day's games featured the op-
posite. The Exeter Red
Army pulled their goalie to
start the game.
The oddity arose when the
Flyers failed to ice a net -
minder. and with the game
clock running, the Red Army
loaned Rich Fletcher to the
Flyers and opposed them
with six skaters.
The Flyers led 2-1 midway
through the second period
before their goalie arrived
and Fletcher went back to
help his mates. The Red
Army overcametheir deficit
and scored a 5-2 win.
Bill Glover and John Ker -
nick fired a pair each and
Dave Bogart had the single.
Chas Maguire and Paul
Allen scored for the losers.
Canabus beat the
Islanders. 6-5 in the second
game. which was marred by
fisticuffs at the end of the se-
cond period, resulting in the
ejection of the culprits.
Wells. Snell and Smith
scored two each for Canabus
while getting one each for
the Islanders were T. Kelly,
Louttit. Gravett, Buton and
Rook.
In the third game, Pfaff
Electric and Crediton battl-
ed to a 6-6 draw.
Ryan. B. Pincombe, Dear-
ing. O'Rourke and Hodgins
scored for the electricians
while Jamie Caldwell had
three for Crediton. Adding
singles were Bell, McGrath
and Muller.
HAND SHAKES - - The Exeter and Dashwood bantams go through the traditional
handshake after finishing their first series game on Friday. Exeter won that contest, but
Dashwood rebounded to take the next two and wrap up the best -of -three WOAA playoff.
