Royal wedding interest
high at Grand Cove
During the next few weeks,
many of us will find our-
selves buying a souvenir of
the much talked about Royal
weduing It may be a plate or
a teacup or a collector spoon
-- something to remember
the summer when Prince
Charles married Lady Diana
Spencer.
Lea Nathan of Grand Cove
Estates has already ordered
her souvenir of the royal
wedding, and for her it will
have a very special
meaning. She hopes to
receive a coin engraved wkth
likeness df Charles and
Diana to commemorate the
wedding.
But the' coin has far
greater importance . than
just the royal wedding to
Mrs. Nathan. It was design-
ed and engraved by her
nephew Philip Nathan.
The coins are a special
issue of the British crown,
with a face value of 25 pence.
However, the cupro-nickle
coin in a plastic pack will
cost one pound, 95 pence
(approximately $4.25
Canadian). The same coin in
silver, in an attractive
presentation case is priced
at 28 pounds, 75 pence
(approximately $66.70
Canadian) .
Mrs. Nathan is British by
birth, and spends most of her
time in Grand Bend. She

returns to England annually,
and stays at Thorpe-
Lesoken, which she
describes as a "lovely,
quaint village."
Mrs. Nathan says that it
was an honour for her
nephew to be chosen to
design the official coin. Mrs.
ROYAL WEDDING COIN - Philip Nathan displays the coin
which he designed to commemorate the wedding of Prince
Charles and Lady Diana. He is the nephew of leo Nathan,
Grand Bend.
Nathan has numerous
newspaper clippings from
the British press concerning
her nephews work on the
crown.
This is the official com-
memorative crown, issued
by the British government.
While many other com-
memorativecoins and
medallions are being
struck, this is the only one
which is actual currency.
Philip Nathan is 40 years
old and lives in England with
his wife and two children.
He is a freelancer, and has
distinguished himself as a
medallist and coin designer.
Recently he designed a set of
coins for Barbados.
Prior to becoming a
freelance artist, Nathan
worked for theFranklin Mint
where he designed such
works as a collection of 12
spoons featuring characters
from Dickens' A Christmas
Carol. He also created a set
of 38 medal depicting dif-
ferent Shakespearean plays.
Nathan's work on the royal
wedding coin was not
without its problems.
According to one of his
aunt's newspapers clippings,
he selected a photograph of
Lady Diana looking "rather
windswept" because it was
"romantic" after which to
pattern his sculture.
However, the future
queen's flyway hair was
tided up a bit on a suggestion
from Prince Philip, who
heads the royal mint ad-
visory committee. The
commiittee felt that Di's
stray locks came too close to
the lettering on the royal
wedding crown.
Despite being asked to
change the original design,

Nathan told his British press
that he is "still well pleased
with the results." Nathan
studied dozens of press
photographs after he was
approached to design the
reverse side of the crown.
"I was going for the light-
hearted and romantic look,
and I found a rather nice
picture of Lady Diana
showing her hair slightly
windswept, which I rather
liked," he said in an in-
terview.
The coin has finally been
approved by Prince Phillip's
committee, as well as by
Charles and Diana, and the
Queen.
tInly 25 million of the
crowns have been struck.
They became available July
7.
Mrs. Nathan only hopes
that the mail strike in
Canada is soon settled so
that she will receive the
special crown sent to her by
her nephew.
ROYAL WEDDING FLAG RAISING - Emlyn Cole, a resident of Grand Cove Estates.
Grand Bend, prepores to raise the flag of the Prince of Wales, in honour of the royal wed-
ding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Mr. Cole, a native of Wales says, that this
flog will be flown at Westminister for the wedding, because Charles is the Prince of Wales.
Charles wos proclaimed prince when he turned 21 at Caernavon Castle in North Wales. The
flog is green and white, with a red dragon in the middle. The Welsh motto on it reads, "Red
Dragon is Rampant". Cole says he has flown the flag on St. David's Day, March 1, in the
past. He says that the tradition of the red dragon goes back to the time of Merlin the magi-
cian, who is said to have had a cove near Cole's home town of Carmarthen. Staff photo
