Firemen from Ailsa Craig
and Ilderton who were com-
peting in a "firemen's tug-
of-war" event nearby rushed
to the scene when the
helicopter was seen going
down.
Ash. who has been flying
helicopters for eight years,
said he decided to land the
machine because it was
making a lot of noise after
the plate was damaged. "I
landed for safety. It wasn't
an emergency situation."
The helicopter is owned by
Edgeworth Helicopters of
London and was not damag-
ed in the landing.
A field of 450 turtles com-
eted for the title of Ontario
Grand Champion on the
weekend. and in the end it
was a retiring box turtle
named Tony who ambled off
with the top honors and
more than $100 in prize
money.
Tony. who hails from a
little-known spot called "Bil-
ly Daniel's Crik" near Ailsa
Craig. ran consistently in all
three of his heats. but with
few flashes of brilliance.
In the final runoff Sunday
against another box turtle
named Speed Demon, Tony
actually stopped just before
the finish line to look for his
competitor. Consequently,
the winning time for the 25 -
foot distance was a tortoise -
like one minute. 16 seconds.
- Tony's owner, Blanche
Collins of Ailsa Craig, said
the turtle trained for the
competition for about a
week by running every day
and eating a carefully
balanced diet of lettuce, cold
meat and crackers!
The competition's fastest
time. set on Saturday by a
speedster named B.J., was
32.5 seconds. which falls
short of the record 31.5 set in
1979 by a turtle named
Leisure Time Charlie.
B J met his future owner
and trainer. seven-year-old
Cathy Amos by chance on a
gravel road near her home
at RR 2. Ailsa Craig, just
days before the competition.
Unfortunately. B.J. peak-
ed during his first race with
a time that was a personal
and competition best, but
during the final race
between the heat winners he
was unable to come any
where near repeating his
earlier performance.
The turtle races were just
one of the attractions that
drew more than 12.000 peo-
ple to Ailsa Craig over the
weekend for their annual
Gala Days celebrations.
The weekend's festivities
included a variety show.
fiddling jamborees. a bed

arm wrestling and
shuffleboard competitions.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Appleton were in Waterloo,
Saturday, where they
attended the wedding of
Pamela Oberle to Jerry
McCullagh. Pamela is the
eldest daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Oberle. Bill played
hockey for Exeter for the
Exeter Mohawks.
B. M. Francis will be
celebrating his 95th birthday
