The weather was ideal and 100 relatives were welcomed by president Bob Heywood. Following grace by Bob Heywood a lovely smorgasbord dinner waS enjoyed by all. Bob Heywood presided during the busines§ meeting and also extended wishes for a speedy recovery for the ill or shut-in relatives. A minute's silence was observed in memory of deceased relatives. The Clan Ode was read as well as the minutes of the previous reunion. Roll Call from the register was read by Vera Blackwell. Special wishes went out to Evelyn and Gordon Heywood on their 65th wed- ding anniversary and to Terry and Andy l'ridham as they leave to make their new home in B.0 Officers elected for 1982' are: president Doug and Jo- anne Heywood; vice presi- dent Steve and Janine Corbett: secretary Elaine Gould: sports committee: Bin and Sandra Struyke and Lonnie and Robin Heywood. • Herb and Reta Heywood, Murray Heywood and Kelly Kernick supervised a much enjoyed sports program. Races: girls 2-4 years Connie Heywood, Leanne Consitt, Lori Gould. Boys 2-4 years - Brad Goddard, Chris Goddard, Chris Heywood. Girls 5-6 years - Angela Gould, Elaine Heywood, Cathy Heywood. Boys 5-8 years - Scott Gould, Robbie Wagner. Girls 7-9 years - Darla Lammie, April Dawn Lewis. Boys 7-9 years - Alan Blom- maert, Brett Lammie. Girls 10-12 years - Ronalyn Bell, Chris Gould. Sandra Cottle. Boys 10-12 years - Darryl Lammie, Rick Heywood, Brent Bell. Kick the slipper for women - Sandra Struyke. Kick the slipper for men - Doug Heywood. Ball race - Bob Heywood's team. Candy guess - Alan Blommaert. Oldest relative present - Gordon Heywood. Youngest relative present - Jeffrey Campbell. Tom and Iva Heywood of Welland were the relatives that came the farthest. Pic A candy scramble which was enjoyed by all the children topped off the sports program. Many remained to visit during a pleasant supper hour. Bob and Kathy Heywood thanked all for attending to make this reunion a most memorable day and invited all to attend next year noting that the reunion would be one week later next year on- ly. Parkhill. Firemen from Ailsa Craig and Ilderton who were com- peting in a "firemen's tug- of-war" event nearby rushed to the scene when the helicopter was seen going down. Ash. who has been flying helicopters for eight years, said he decided to land the machine because it was making a lot of noise after the plate was damaged. "I landed for safety. It wasn't an emergency situation." The helicopter is owned by Edgeworth Helicopters of London and was not damag- ed in the landing. A field of 450 turtles com- eted for the title of Ontario Grand Champion on the weekend. and in the end it was a retiring box turtle named Tony who ambled off with the top honors and more than $100 in prize money. Tony. who hails from a little-known spot called "Bil- ly Daniel's Crik" near Ailsa Craig. ran consistently in all three of his heats. but with few flashes of brilliance. In the final runoff Sunday against another box turtle named Speed Demon, Tony actually stopped just before the finish line to look for his competitor. Consequently, the winning time for the 25 - foot distance was a tortoise - like one minute. 16 seconds. - Tony's owner, Blanche Collins of Ailsa Craig, said the turtle trained for the competition for about a week by running every day and eating a carefully balanced diet of lettuce, cold meat and crackers! The competition's fastest time. set on Saturday by a speedster named B.J., was 32.5 seconds. which falls short of the record 31.5 set in 1979 by a turtle named Leisure Time Charlie. B J met his future owner and trainer. seven-year-old Cathy Amos by chance on a gravel road near her home at RR 2. Ailsa Craig, just days before the competition. Unfortunately. B.J. peak- ed during his first race with a time that was a personal and competition best, but during the final race between the heat winners he was unable to come any where near repeating his earlier performance. The turtle races were just one of the attractions that drew more than 12.000 peo- ple to Ailsa Craig over the weekend for their annual Gala Days celebrations. The weekend's festivities included a variety show. fiddling jamborees. a bed race. a 10 -kilometre run, arm wrestling and shuffleboard competitions. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Appleton were in Waterloo, Saturday, where they attended the wedding of Pamela Oberle to Jerry McCullagh. Pamela is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Oberle. Bill played hockey for Exeter for the Exeter Mohawks. B. M. Francis will be celebrating his 95th birthday on July 29.
