RR 1 Exeter 237. 3223 A HEARTY BREAKFAST -- Gerry and Anne Gray were two of the many Exeter and area residents taking advantage of Saturday's delicious breakfast supplied by the Exeter firemer, T -A photo Middlesex board opts for grade 13 Middlesex County board of education does not believe Grade 13 should be banished from Ontario high schools nor does it think major changes should be im- plemented to the high school credit system. Trustees made those facts clear Monday when they approved the board's official reply- to the Ontario government's secondary education review project. The ministry of education is studying reaction to 101 recommendations for change proposed by the committee. Among those recommendations is the telescoping of the current five-year high school program into four years along with the introduction of a new credit system based on 30- hour periods of study. In its reply, the Middlesex board insisted that if he fifth year of high school w removed it would probabl be picked up by anoth r, learning institution. "It is likely that secondary; school graduates after Grade 12 will spend a fifth year in furthur education somewhere, in job training, at college or university, all of which are more expensive for society than a fifth year at the secondary school level," trustees said in a written brief. The board also insisted that the proposed 30 -hour credit system "will not improve upon the present system.'•' The board also objected to the committee's assertion that all Ontario high school students should reach a level of proficiency in Canada's two official languages. It was a suggestion, the board said, that was "not reasonable" because Mid- dlesex County is not an area where students have the opportunity of using the second language outside the classroom. "We believe that it is more important for students to be able to write and speak well in the national language predominant in the area before trying to become bilingual. Trustees approved the brief despite complaints from trustee Delmar Cobban that it was too negative and did not make any statements about parts of the report that the board approved. In other business, the board agreed to establish a spacial committee to examine the effect London's proposed annexa HA of county area might have on education tax assessment. The committee will examine the proposal and make suggestions on whether any kind of political action would be appropriate. Deaf is Enough Sun.
