UCW leads
in worship
The president of the Lucan
UCW, Shirley Ryan, led the
congregation in worship at
Lucan United Church on
Sunday. The theme of the
service was "Love" so all
the hymns, etc. were on this
topic. Jane Forster, a
member of the Friendship
Unit sang the solo "Love
Divine" and Verna Ibbitson
of the Dorcas Unit told the
Children's Story prior to
Junior Congregation, which
was led by Betty Hall.
Beth Cowdrey, leader of
the Friendship Unit, read
selected Scriptures on
"Love", gave the Pastoral
Prayer.
Linda Froats and Shirley
Jones sang a lovely duet
"Isis Love Has no Limits"
and Iva Hodgins gave the
message on the chosen
theme. "The world is
lamentably short of out-
going love" said Mrs.
Hodgins and asked the
question "Have we the kind
of personality that is marked
by kindness, unselfishness
and consideration for
others?" giving the quote
John 15:13. Our approach to
others changes when we
come into a Living Personal
Relationship with God.
Paul tells us many things
about love, one is to make
love our aim. Without the
spirit of love in us, life is
defective, incomplete and
imperfect. The hope of life
and of the world is in the
resurrection of Christ, the
power of God let loose in the
world. The message closed
with the Prayer of St.
Frances, repeated in unison.
Mrs. Ryan thanked all who
had participated and Janey
Robertson, particularly for
playing for the service.
Leda Revington and
Dorothy Lankin welcomed
friends at the door and were
joined by Mabel Froats and
Donna VanArenthals to
receive the offering.
Next Sunday the service
will be in charge of the
Couples' Club, and "The
Living Waters Gospel
Singers" take the service.
Everyone is welcome to
come and hear this group
which has travelled coast to
coast ministering through
their music. A "love" of-
fering will be received to
help defray their expenses.

The New Testament
Lesson was read from
Romans 7: 21-8:6 and the
Gospel read from Matt:
11:25 -30. The Homily
delivered by Rev. Pocock
wasbased on these readings.
Paul points out very clearly,
the complete sinfulness of
man. We desire to do right,
but evil lies close at hand
ever tempting us, and
causing us to sin.
But then Paul tells us how
we may obtalin relief from
the burdens of our sins. We
are called to follow Jesus
Christ, giving up our selfish
ways. In the gospel, Jesus
invites each of us to "Come
to me, all who labour and are
heavy laden, and I will give
you rest," These comforting
words give us hope to live
our lives daily, as our
Saviour asks - in the world
but not of it.
Rev. Pocock concluded his
message by singing "Come
to the Water"
During the receiving of the
Bread and Wine, Penny
Hodgins sang"Fill My House
To The Fullest" ac-
companying herself on the
guitar.

18 shows that man can be
freed from the bondage of sin
in which he fell in Eden, then

When Adam fell, the sin
nature became inherent in
all mankind. The reason
people do wrong is because
of inherent sin. The biggest
battle man fights is between
good and evil. Man is not
spiritually equipped for this
battle on his own.

July 26 Sunday, Rev.L.J.

ministering in the Sunday
service. Rev. Wood is pastor
of the church where the
group from Lucan went to
help build the school in Haiti.
Tuesday evening for
family night Rev. Williams,
from Rochester NY, but a
Canadian, spoke from Mark
10:46-52. This story tells how
Jesus gave Bartimeaus an
opportunity to make a
confession of his need. Jesus
gave him what he asked for,
his sight. Jesus still waits
for us to tell Him our need.
Many times we do not have
enough faith to ask largely.
We should not be limited to a
particular need, as Jesus
wants to release us from all
our problems. We need to
ask God to fill our spiritual
vessels, for power to serve
him.
