Dual purpose playground setup
The purpose of this year's
Exeter summer playground
program is two -fold -it must
be creative and rewarding
for the children and must be
a learning experience for the
staff, said recreation
director Don "Boom"
Gravett.
One of the methods to
achieve this is to try not to
have the saie leader with
the same Tge group two
weeks in a row. The leaders
must become versatile and
be jack -of -all trades, Gravett
explained.
"If the leader and the kid
don't learn something—we've
failed," he said.
Gravett stressed the
playground would be in-
novative this year. With little
in the way of supplies, no
budget for supplies, no
washrooms at Victoria Park
(where part of the junior
program will take place) and
an all new staff it will have'to
be innovative he said.
Helping to solve part of the
problem of supplies is a $500
donation from the Exeter
Lion's Club.
A $2,038 Experience '81
grant from the ministry of
culture and recreation will
pay for the three staff
members.
Patti Down has been hired
as supervisor, with Scott
Batten and Marg Pym as
assistants.
Gravett is pleased that
four leaders -in -training
(LTT) will also be on the
staff. They are: Marlene
Winters, Susan Bir-
mingham, John Wells and
John Gravett.
The LITs are "the, grass
roots of the playground" -and
Gravett hopes they will
move up to paid positions in
later years.
The leaders completed a four
day leadership course, the
Lake Huron zone rec
director's leadership camp,
in Goderich.
The brochure for the
program stresses it is not a
baby sitting service. Only
school age, or children en-
tering school in the fall are
eligible.
There will be a junior day
camp for children aged 4 to
10 years. The program
operates at the rec centre
and Victoria Park. Children
are required to bring a lunch
for the all -day program.
The senior playground, for
children 10 to maximum 16,
will be run at the rec centre
grounds. It will operate from
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from
1:30 to 4 p.m.
Both programs feature
daily events such as
organized games, quiet
periods, crafts, music and
singing games and free play
tailored to the age group and
needs.
School facilities will be
used fororganized sports and
Fridays will be special
events days. Special events
planned include a scavenger
hunt, cowboy and indian day
and pool games.
Throughout the summer
children participating will
have the opportunity to
compete in the Lake Huron
Zone track and field day, and
a play day with other
community groups.
Cost for the program is 25
cents per child per day or $1
per week, or $3 per week for
families with three or more
children.
