Punchinello, who's that funny fellow?" some of the children were chanting as they entered the upstairs hall over the Ailsa Craig Library last Saturday afternoon. Behind the specially built puppet' stage Hansel and Gretel came alive to delight the audience. The ugly wicked witch once again got herself destroyed by her own evil in- tentions while the colourful Hansel and Gretel were reunited with their loving parents. A few songs sung by 2-D puppets rounded out the program. Although tine audience consisted mostly of children and a few parents, the group is designed.for adult puppet theatre. It was established last January on a Canada Works grant. "We 'are dedicated to establishing a permanent puppet theatre in London" explained Bernie Martin, manager of the group. young people ma, up the group and each carries wide respon- sibilities. They create their own puppets, scenery. lighting and write, their own material. "We have five different family shows we do", ex- plained Bernie. '"One of our basic objectives is to stimulate public awareness of puppetry as an art form. To limitrpuppetry to the role of children's entertainment, and in particular a t.v. phenomena, is to deny the. public an extremely ver- satile and expressive medium.". .
