Only few days left
for easy gun buying
By BILL McNUtT
December 31 'is ap-
proaching fast! The last day
et 1978 is also the last day
that anyone will be allowed
to."just go out" and pur-
chase a firearm in Canada.
• Starting January 1, all -
persons purchasing any .
firearm, must produce a
firearm acquisition cer-
tificate. IC will then be
unlawful to bring into your
possession any firearm
without first having a F.A.C.
This incluife's receiving .
firearms as gifts and private
purchases. -
It is also unlawful to sell,
give or trade a firearm to
anyone who does not produce
the cei4lificate.
• The firearms acquision
certificate will be available
' from your local . police
station during office hours '
- after the new year..
Obtaining the certificate is
nRdifficult; all you must do
is goTb-(he office.and fill out
a form. They will not be
issued on the spot. It may
. take only an hour but -"may
-take two or more da)s before •
you receive,an answer>
All applicants refused
must be notified by mail and
they have 30 days to.appeal
the police department
decision. Appeal ins
will be included with our
refusal.
The majdr refusal reasons
wit! be a history of violence,
drugs or alcoholism but any
criminal record will also
have a heavy beating on the
answer.
• All applicants must be 18
• years of age or older and
have a ten dollar bill. More
costs' But then why should
we not have to pay for the
cost of the certificate.
A parting 'thought for
today is found in the booklet
"Gun Control in Canada". It
.states Those persons
currently in possession of
hunting and sporting rifles
will not be required to obtain
Firearms Acquisition
Certificates for those
weapons, but only for new
acquisitions."
The questior{* what will
happen to people owning
weapons who apply for but
are refused a certificate?
Will the police. have any
- other choice but to seize the
weapons?
