Most contaminated
salmon are heading upstream
By BILL McNUTT
The chinook salmon are
once again swimming
against the current in the
Ausable River. They have
appeared as far upstream as
the Morrison Dam and can
be found throughout the
watershed looking for
suitable habitat to spawn.
The chinook is native to the
Pacific Ocean and its
tributaries " in North
America. I could not get an
exact date but it was 10 or 12
years ago that the Michigan
Ministry of Natural
Resources stocked
fingerlings into Lake Huron.
They had hoped that these
fish would return to their
streams to spawns Instead,
the fish which matured
rapidly in the lake, spread
out and ventured up streams
all around Lake Huron. This
explains why, although the
Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources has never stocked
chinook in Lake Huron, we
have the Targe gamefish in
our streams.
In their native habitat they
have been found to reach
nearly 100 pounds. These are

If you hove the,
disappearing -type
windshield wipers, it's a
good idea to check the
opening in front of your
windshield regularly to
remove any twigs,
leaves, or what -have -
you that might get stuck
there. These obstructions
would strain the wiper
motor.
A regular squeak ,from
the front sides of your
cor, plus any loss of
steering control, indicate
ball joint wear. Ball
joints should be in-
spected at least twice a
year. Driving in bad
weather may dilute the
lubrication and cause
excess wear.
Older engines may need
a richer §os mixture to
assure prompt starting.
Have the choke ad-
justed.

We're auto exper)sl
fish which have lived past
the average three or four
years. It is commonly
believed they all die after
spawning but some do
survive. In Ontario the
chinook will weigh up to 40
lbs. but the twenty pounder
is not uncommon.
Most large fish in Lake
Huron, including salmon and
large rainbow trout. are
contaminated with P.C.B.
due to this it is strongly
recommended that they not
be used for human con-
sumption.
It was for this reason that
two years ago a ban was put
on commercial fishing for
salmon in Lake Huron.
Until recently these fish
seemed unable to spawn
successfully in our waters.
Some salmon smalt young)
have been found in streams
in the Owen Sound district.
These young are believed to
be from fistswhich have
lived to spawn a second or
third time.
Hopefully in time we may
have successful spawning in
the Ausable. Some of the fish
will be coming of age for a
.second run up our river soon.
Nearly everyone - fishing
this week has been luck y
enough to catch a salmon in
our area. I saw two people on
Thursday with nine good
fish. It obvious they had a
good afternoon.
Maybe I should make it
"clear here that the only legal
means of catching these fish
is by angling. The useof snag
hooks. spears, iron pipe and
rets is unlawful.
The legal fishermen have
been quite well rewarded
when fishing with Targe
silver spoons and spinners at
the head of pools and runs in
the river. Some people have
also taken a few on spawn
bags: -
I cannot see why anyone
would want to take one of
these fish (especially when
contaminated) by illegal
methods. They should not be
eaten so what is left btit the
thrill of catching'them, and a
thrill it is when done legally
The only other thing one
could do is have one mounted
as a memento of- a thrilling
experience. The present cost
of having one mounted is
