Women's
Year
\
rata - _ L
tab This is Women's Year across Canada and like the com-
iatmercial, says, "Why not"? Officials of the Grand Bend
hot Minor 5ports Association are certainly thinking in that
esi direction.
utu At Wednesday night's annual sports award banquet, the
usual presentation was made to the athlete of the year as
y far as n;itinor sports in Grand Bend is concerned.
he You guessed it. The award went to a female athlete and
im from ill comments during the presentations it was very
IN much' deserved.
'-Karen Ford who participates in figure skating, gym-
.ap nasties among other sporting events received the John
va Payne Insurance trophy for her efforts during the past
ire year.
ilei It's great to see Karen win this award. Just goes to
nu show that efforts by female participants are being recogniz-
ric' ed.
In a similar vein in many areas, ladies are enthusiastic
im boosters of minor hockey and lending their support in many
na ways. In Exeter, the novice hockey team known as the Wax -
/is ers have Shirley Pratt handling the managerial duties and
ha she comes through with a fine effort.
Iu( Carolanne Doig of Seaforth who is again handling public
?ff relations duties for the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation
Authority is a registered hockey referee with the Western
lel Ontario Athletic Association and handles minor games in
the Seaforth area.
)ei While talking about the Grand Bend minor hockey ban -
o quet it was interesting to note that officers of the Ontario
ova Provincial Police detachment at the Pinery Park presented
a trophy.
Zvi' In making the presentation, detachment chief Corporal
.af Bruce Shipley said he and his officers felt they would like to
Fin do something to promote good sportsmanship and decided
riN to purchase a trophy. .
About 45 summer resort youngsters were eligible for
int the most sportsmanlike award and it went to Mark Willert,
Ea again a well deserved honour.
th. Shipley said his group felt good sportsmanship at the
minor hockey level was a very important ingredient in
ex producing good citizens of the future.
Hi Canada Week
of This will be our last opportunity to talk about the up-
fo coming Canada Week celebrations in Exeter. They begin
Friday night June 27 and conclude on Canada Day which is
now observed on July 1 despite which day of the week it
may fall on.
The local committee charged with putting the five day
event together have shown a lot of enthusiasm so it's to be
hoped all citizens get behind the observances in any way. It
doesn't matter how small your contribution may be.
As local librarian ElizabethSchroeder saidat oneof the
earlier meetings, "we could all participate by reading one
Canadian book". There are other ways, too. Like flying a
Canadian flag for the week preceding July 1 and a few days
afterward.
We would hope everybody gets on the bandwagon to
show we are proud of our country and proud to be called
Canadians. The national slogan for the week is "Canada -
give it a hug". Let's all do this, regardless of age or how big
✓ the hug maybe.
The events planned give everybody a chance to par-
ticipate. For those ready to "trip the light fantastic", Joe
Overholt and his orchestra will be at the arena Friday night
to get things rolling.
Saturday brings about the official opening of the Exeter
Lions club tennis courts with a couple of top notch tennis
performers on hand. It starts at 1 p.m.
Saturday evening, officials of the Exeter fair board are
organizing a talent show at the arena. They are expecting a
good line-up of top notch talent so this show should be well
worth attending.
Sunday everybody get the chance to take part in the pic-
nic in the afternoon and the community church service in
the evening.
Judging in the Alpha Pi Sorority sponsored garden com-
petition will be carried out Monday afternoon with judges
being driven around town by a horse and surrey with a
fringe on top. It is hoped the general cleanliness and
appearance of lawns and gardens will come about through
the contest.
Sports hold the spotlight Tuesday, July 1 with playing of
the Exeter Centennial soccer tournament and challenge
softball games and lawn bowling jitneys.
The whole celebration winds up Tuesday night with a
flag lowering ceremony and Open House at the Exeter
Legion.
Let's everybody pull together and make Canada Week a
roaring success that it may become an annual event .
A great accomplishment
Received a note over the weekend from Dave Silcock,
coach of the Exeter squirts soccer team which contained
very exciting news.
The entry of the Exeter team coached by Silcock has
been accepted to participate in the North American Midget
Cup competition. With only 111 entries out of a total of 627
being accepted its a great honour for the local club to be
selected..
The Midget cup tourney is sponsored by the Rochester
and New York Cosmos professional soccer teams for the
betterment of junior soccer in North America.
The four successful teams who make the finals in New
York on October 4 will receive their trophies from Pele. the
best known soccer star in the world.
The first certified preliminary game for the Exeter
club will be this coming Saturday morning when they travel
to Germain Park in Sarnia to take on the Sarnia squirts.
Game time is 10:30 a.m.
The Exeter squirts have a perfect record to date in the
Huron Minor Soccer Association this year. We believe they
have five straight victories and have yet to have a goal
scored against them.
A lot of the credit should go to coach Dave Silcock who
has considerable soccer playing experience in England and
with the Detroit Cougars in the North American
Professional league.
Of the 111 teams accepted for the competition, 76 were
chosen because of past experience in the VAMC and the
other 35 of their records to date this year.
Selection of the Exeter squirts mean they are rated
among the top 100 teams of their age group in North
America. Congratulations and best of luck to Dave and his
gang.

Royal hurler gets no-hitter
in last performance on hill
Bob George threw a no-hitter
Thursday night as the Exeter
Royals blanked West Corners 3-0
in a Southwestern Fastball
Association game at Exeter
Community Park.
It was George's last pitching
stint for the Royals. He has
signed with CFB London and 'A'
class club and will be ineligible
for the Exeter team as a pitcher.
George came close to turning in
a perfect performance. Only
one West Corners batter was able
to reach first base, that coming
on an error in the first inning.
The Exeter hurler helped his
own cause in the fourth inning
and rode home on Scott Burton's
long home run down the left field
line.
Burton picked up all runs
batted in for the Royals. He
singled in the sixth to score Ron
Bogart from second base.
In picking up his fourth victory
against only one defeat, Bob
George struck out 15 opposing
batters. Blair Stewart, who was
on the mound for West Corners
was also effective. He gave up
only six hits while gaining five
strikeouts.
The other base hits for the
Royals were singles by Doug
Pearson and Ron Bogart.
The Royals will be back in
action Thursday at Exeter
Community Park with Beech-
wood supplying the opposition.
Wednesday. July 12 they will be
at home to Parkhill.
Tuesday night the Royals came
up with two runs in the bottom of
the ninth inning to eke out a 5-4

decision over last year's league
champions from Lieury.
Jim Pfaff singled Joe
O'Rourke home from second base
with the winning run with one out
in the ninth. O'Rourke's hit had
chased Ron Mason in with the
tying marker after Lieury had
moved one run ahead in the top of
the same inning. Paul Hodgins
tallied the fourth Lieury score.
Jim Thompson and Stan
Hemming crossed the plate for
Lieury in the third. In the fourth
the Royals tied things up as Bob
George and Scott Burton came
around to score.
Each team scored a run in the
sixth. Scott Burton singled and
counted for Exeter and S. Dixon
replied for Lieury.
Ron Mason was the winning
pitcher for the Royals giving up
seven hits.
In a tournament at Dorchester
over the weekend, the Royals lost
a 10-0 decision to Wellesley ,
edged Huron Park 1-0 and
defeated Kellogg's of London 1-0.
The last win was cancelled
when Exeter pitcher Bob George
was disqualified from the tourney
because he had signed an "A"
certificate with CFB Lances of
London.
Centennials win
in first playoff
The Exeter Centennials
defeated Taxandria 2-1 in the
opening round of the Ausable
Valley soccer league mid-season
tournament.
The four first round winners
will continue for the "A" trophy
with games at the Ailsa Craig
Boys farm grounds on July 6. The
other four clubs will vie for "B"
honours.
In the next round the Cen-
tennials will be matched against
West Lorne, a club which is
undefeated this season. The
regular league schedule con-
tinues July 13.
In the win over Taxandria,
John Rasenberg scored for the
Centennials in the first half and
Ron Funston booted the winning
score late in the second half.

Crediton juveniles win twice
The Crediton juveniles came up
with victories in their two
Western Ontario Athletic
Association games played this
week.
Wednesday, the Crediton club
scored a 9-1 win over Mitchell and
Sunday they triumphed over
Chesley by a score of 6-2. Both
games were played on the
Crediton diamond.
Against Chesley Sunday af-
ternoon, Crediton hurler Larry
Clarke gave up only two hits
while recording 18 strikeouts
over the full nine inning route.
Chesley scored both runs in the
fourth inning before the Crediton
club started to roll. In the bottom
of the fourth Pete Wuerth was
safe on an error and scored the
first Crediton marker on singles
by Larry Clarke and Steve
Schroeder.
Singles by Larry Clarke and
Kevin Bestard produced the
power to send three Crediton runs
across the plate in the seventh
and the final two scores came in
the eighth when Rob Dickey was
hit by a pitch and scored as Kevin
Bestard blasted a home run.
Bill Wilson was Crediton's
winning pitcher in Wednesday's
9-1 decision over Mitchell.Wilson
gave up eight hits and fanned 11
Mitchell batters in the nine inning
contest.
The Crediton club scored three
times in the second inning and
were never seriously threatened
as Wilson kept the visitors in
check. Rick Bowers and Brian
Taylor doubled and Bill Wilson
and Kevin Bestard delivered

unable to come up with enough

which was completed in one hour
and a half, Crediton scored two
runs in the first inning and
finished off with three more
scores in the sixth while
Palmerston rallied for two runs
in the bottom of the seventh.
Richard Webb started the
Crediton rally off with a single in
the first frame and came across
the plate on Darrell Preszcator's
triple. Dennis Preszcator
followed with a single to plate his
twin brother.
